Wow, that’s magic! It’s challenging to win in a coach’s first season. It’s challenging to win in Indiana. Don’t tell those things to Curt Cignetti, though, as he was responsible for the most spectacular college football turnaround of the 2024 season in his first year in Indiana. Does Cignetti know of a well-thought-out plan or a quick way to win? Not sure. However, there is undoubtedly a secret to a first-year coach’s success. At this point, the coach suggests the secret of his success.
Cignetti revealed the key to his success in a new edition of Move the Sticks, which aired on November 16 on the NFL show Bucky Brooks and Rhett Lewis, stating “Look they want to come in here they play and contribute they want to start right but they want to win too and so we so the vision of what could happen and quite frankly I’ve had big one-year turnarounds every job I took.” Adding, “You know because I got this magic wand in my back pocket yeah there it is so um and I thought I thought that confidence I needed to portray that in this particular situation at this place a little more outwardly than the other places.” It merely shows that Cignetti and his squad have mutual respect and faith in one another, which enables them to win consistently and remain undefeated. There is no actual secret or plan for Cignetti.

However, it’s pretty impressive that his team’s 10-0 in his first year coaching at Indiana. If you don’t know, Indiana’s football team suffered from a 9-27 record over its previous 3 campaigns, including a miserable 3-24 record in Big 10, when Cignetti took command in late 2023. Many fans and pundits thought the effort was almost unattainable, making it a frightening challenge. Nonetheless, Cignetti, who has successfully revived teams at James Madison and Elon, said he is confident in his capacity to alter Indiana football’s standards and culture.
And observe Hoosier’s current situation. Cignetti placed a strong emphasis on altering the team’s culture and mindset. He wanted to give players who used to be a part of a losing environment a sense of hope and drive. His strategy of encouraging an “underdog” mentality struck a chord with many athletes trying to establish themselves.

Not only this, he has done a lot for the program. He has a significant influence on Indiana’s future, in addition to his current success. It looks like things will go well under the Cignetti dynasty in 2025.

Addressing the roster issue was one of Cignetti’s first moves. He arrived at a massive turnover, with half of the defensive linemen and 10 offensive starters going through the transfer portal. He was able to completely change the roster in a matter of weeks, adding 48 new players and 31 transfers. Plus, keeping important assistants from his prior coaching positions was part of this aggressive recruitment effort, which preserved continuity and a common program vision.

Indiana has become a competitive team under Cignetti’s tutelage, and they are now vying for a College Football Playoff spot. With a resounding 20-15 victory over Michigan in front of a sizable home crowd, the Hoosiers have an unbeaten record after twelve weeks of play. Not only this, but the future of Hoosier also seems secure under Cignetti.
Because of Cignetti’s accomplishments, Indiana is well-positioned to become a future collegiate football powerhouse. The program’s strong financial support and compatibility with NIL opportunities help it maintain its competitive advantage. According to Indiana alum Mark Cuban, keeping up the momentum and expanding on this year’s accomplishments depend heavily on Cignetti’s ability to fulfill his commitments. We’ll have to wait and see where the team goes with Curt Cignetti.
