Lee Corso's legacy: Is it more about football or the lives he's touched beyond the field?

The legendary Lee Corso is going through the glimpses of his rigorous coaching career, and the entire college football world has been on the watch. The College GameDay broadcast live from Indiana University staggeringly turned into a Lee Corso ‘homecoming’ blast today before the Washington and Indiana lace up the shoes in another spectacular showdown. The former Indiana coach has been an old hat in the ESPN high-rated shows. But what’s the most striking from today’s episode, it marked two generations of coaches sitting beside each other and sharing their connections in a phenomenal confab.

Current IU coach Curt Cignetti, who has been carrying the Hosiers to their level best (aspiring for 8-0 for the first time since 1967) since the third-winningest coach passed the buck, shares more with his preceded than meets the eye. Spilling Corso’s unwavering support during a personal rough period, Cignetti said, ‘‘My dad overcame cancer when I was a senior in high school. Lee sent a holy cross that in the letter had special healing powers, that sat on top of his dresser from surgery through his recovery. He beat cancer and lived 43 more years.”

Diving into complete awe, the entire Bloomington crowd could only feel the sentiment behind the wholesome beyond the professionals. The day was equally emotional, and drippy for Corso as well. Encircled by the members of the Holiday Bowl-winning team, that put Corso’s best record during his Indiana tenure from 1973 to 82 on a re-display, the veteran was heavily fighting his tears. How wouldn’t he? After all, the cinematic tribute totally justifies the emotion, and the grandeur hinged on the 89-year-old.

Lee Torso gets immersed in a heart-rending tribute from his old school

The IU Athletics Hall of Fame caught the crowd off guard the moment he touched down the Bloomington venue, coming out straight from a fascinating double-decker bus. The theme was to travel back to the time when he and his players used to arrive at Memorial Stadium ahead of his first game in charge in the same esque. Corso’s inch-perfect attire was, nonetheless, a cherry on the top of a gala entrance. An iconic Indiana pullover sweatshirt, a crest of his coaching excellence, caught the eyeballs big time, and quite rightfully so.

The video went viral in moments and garnered almost 35,000 views within seconds. The hype has been unreal, and it’s more so as the veteran coach spent a significant time of this year outside of the show due to physical distress, building up sky-high excitement to get him back on the boards.
