Can NC State pull off an upset against Clemson, or is it a pipe dream?

NC State is all ready to face Clemson in Death Valley on September 21, but not without a pinch of their overall team strength. After all, back-to-back injuries made a chaotic grip all over, heading to week 4. Although they came off fresh from a low-margin (30-20) victory against Louisiana Tech yesterday. Still, the void in the lineup really caused a wake-up call for HC Kevin Keatts. After senior Cornerback Aydan White’s drop off raking an injury in the last game, Brandon Cisee, another key contributor in the CB, seemed to be down with a minor head hurt, but that was still not it. QB Grayson McCall shoved off and went to the locker room with a sudden discomfort. It is still up in the air whether or not McCall will be back by next week.

On the other hand, Clemson is striving to kick off the ACC play in a dominant way. The favorite of Saturday’s home ACC opener had a victory over nine out of eleven games emanating from Death Valley. Moreover, ESPN put the Tigers above the Wolfpacks in their latest SP+ ranking, carrying the testament of superiority over their Saturday rivals. However, momentum can shift quickly. NC State will still have a chance to alter the prediction if they can use CJ Bailey properly to ease out the absence of McCall. But all these escapades demand your undivided attention to the stadium, either straight from the gallery or from the TV screen. For those unversed, the game will go live on ABC and FuboTV from Memorial Stadium at 12 p.m. on September 21st.

The two teams’s well-documented rivalry dates back to 1899, when the Tigers got the upper hand with a 24-0 blowout. Clemson also mounted a 60-29-1 record in the series, counting the two programs getting under each other’s skin every year since 1971. The only exception was in 2020 when the global pandemic plight cut it short.

From 2004 and 2019, the Tigers single-handedly dominated the scoreboard with 15 wins (the last eight wins were back-to-back, earning them a unique record) out of 16 games.

The Wolfpack, however, swept the board in 2021 by winning 27-21 in a double-overtime thriller, but the glory was short-lived as the Tigers evened the score with a 30-20 victory last season.
