The 2024 collegiate football season has begun flawlessly for the Army. Army has defeated its first 5 rivals in perfect fashion thus far, and head coach Jeff Monken is becoming well-known in the national coaching community. Since joining the Black Knights in 2014, Monken has guided Army to 5 bowl game appearances and 75 overall victories.

At the start of Monken’s tenure, the Army had two losing seasons. However, in the eight years thereafter, the Black Knights have only made five bowl appearances. Additionally, the Army has earned at least a portion of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy five times in that time frame, including in 2023. In 2024, the Army’s inaugural season as an AAC member, they are doing well. With all he’s achieved, you’d think the coach makes a fortune, but his salary might shock you.

Surprisingly, Monken only earns $2 million a year, which is much less than the highest-paid head coaches, like Kirby Smart of Georgia, who earns over $13 million. In 2023, Monken consented to a contract extension that would have paid him an average of $2 million annually. The 2027 season will mark the end of that agreement. You may wonder if he will remain with the Army next year given this amount, but keep in mind that he earned less money before the contract extension, but he remained faithful to the program. He has served in the Army for ten seasons.

Monken is the second-most successful coach in Army West Point football tradition, with a 66-50 record overall. Monken and the Black Knights have had the best win-loss record among the Service Academy programs since 2017 with a 52-27 (.658) record. During this time, they are tied for the 21st-greatest overall record in CFB. “No coach in college football epitomizes the essence of their institution better than Jeff Monken. His commitment to developing young men in every facet of their lives is genuine and effective and I’m thrilled that he will continue to educate, train, and inspire our cadets while winning football games,” said Mike Buddie, the director of athletics.

How long is Monken’s contract?

Since the conclusion of the 2016 CFB season, the Army has not disclosed the details of a head coach’s contract. Monken led the Army to an 8-5 overall record and a Heart of Dallas Bowl victory in 2016, earning $932,521 in salary compensation plus a $50,000 bonus, according to Army. Then signed a contract agreement with the program through 2020 after the 2016 season.

The Black Knights’ most famous season under Monken started the recent 7-year comeback in 2016 when the coach guided Army to a bowl game victory and their first victory over Navy since 2001, the first time the Army had done both in the same season since 1984. Hopefully, this coach will contribute more to the program in the future. Let’s wait and watch.
