Home/College Football

Michael Vick, the first overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL draft’s life, has always been about rewriting narratives. From his electric performances at Virginia Tech to becoming the league’s first quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, the man knows how to make headlines. And now, as the new head coach at Norfolk State, Vick is stepping into a role that feels both poetic and powerful—a homecoming to Hampton Roads and a chance to inspire a new generation of athletes. But while fans and players look to Vick for leadership, it’s his family that stands as the foundation of his journey.

Vick, now 44, isn’t just the iconic quarterback who turned Virginia Tech into a national powerhouse or the first Black QB taken No. 1 overall in the NFL draft. He’s also a devoted father to four children, each carving their unique paths. His oldest, Mitez, was born in July 2002 to Vick’s high school sweetheart, Tameka Taylor. While football was always Vick’s calling, Mitez has chosen a different stage—pursuing a career in acting and recently attending the New York Film Academy. For Vick, watching his son step into the spotlight is a reminder that passion takes many forms.

After parting ways with Taylor, Micheal Vick found his partner in life and love, Kijafa, who has been by his side since his NFL glory days. Together, they’ve built a family that thrives on creativity and ambition. Their first child, Jada, arrived in 2004 and has already shown she’s inherited her father’s competitive streak. Football runs through her veins, and Vick has mentioned how proud he is to see her take an interest in the sport that defined his life. For Jada, her dad isn’t just a coach—he’s her role model.

London, born in 2007, brings a different rhythm to the Vick household. At 17, she’s leaning into her passion for music, adding a harmonious counterpoint to the family’s sports-heavy dynamic. The former FOX NFL Sunday reporter has often expressed his admiration for his children’s individuality, embracing their unique paths with the same energy he brought to the field. Then there’s the youngest, Michael Jr., born in 2017, who already seems poised to carry the NFL legend’s legacy forward. The name itself feels symbolic, a nod to the quarterback’s belief in the power of beginnings.

As Norfolk State’s athletic director, Melody Webb, aptly put it, this is a “historic day” for the program, and “I am thrilled to welcome Michael Vick and his family back to the Hampton Roads area to lead our football program.” Vick’s hiring isn’t just about football; it’s about community, leadership, and redemption. His journey from Newport News to national stardom and now back to his roots is a testament to resilience. Even the Buffs coach, who knows a thing or two about balancing high expectations with familial pride, sent his old friend a message for his new role. “Let’s go baby! We’ve got to support, encourage, assist and show consistent Love to Coach Vick!” Sanders said.

Michael Vick’s recent announcement about leaving FOX for a head coaching role was nothing short of heartfelt. The former NFL star couldn’t hide his emotions as he reflected on the bittersweet decision to leave broadcasting behind for a chance to guide young athletes in his hometown. “This wasn’t easy,” Vick admitted, as reported by The Mirror US. “But when you get an opportunity to go lead young men in your community, where I grew up watching this team… it’s special.”

Vick didn’t shy away from acknowledging the challenges ahead but made it clear he was ready to rise to the occasion. “They wanted me to be the head coach with no experience,” he shared, “but I’ve got what it takes. I’ve got all the right people around me, and I’m ready to embark on this new journey,” he said in appreciation for his beautiful family of five members.
