Is Travis Hunter's dual-side play enough to overshadow Ashton Jeanty's record-breaking season?

‘If your Heisman discussion list doesn’t start with Travis Hunter, you’re not doing it right’: Former Colorado QB’s sensational one-liner is enough to make any newbie understand where the 21-year-old Colorado WR/CB stands in the coveted Heisman talks. Well, Clatt isn’t over-pitching it, anyway. You might hate Deion Sanders for a million other reasons, but giving enough leeway to his guy, Travis Hunter, both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, can’t be one of them. Exploring and hyping a young lad with exceptional two-way ability is arguably the best decision of Coach Prime (if voting for him in the Heisman odds is not). The build-up is so real and so high that almost all other frontrunners are getting off the road except Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty. The Florida native ensures people aren’t just handing it to Hunter, and guess what? He has an underrated reason to back it up.

Ashton Jeanty started to get under Travis’ skin for a while. The kid racked up some of the craziest numbers in his current breakout season with the Broncos. Despite now being ranked lower than the Buffs star, Jeanty, even if it’s for some time, managed to dominate the Heisman watch list with girthy odds. Thanks to Hunter’s mid-season injury hiccup, but come on, I mean, that doesn’t mean we can just sell short the electrifying RB’s record rushing season. But he’s not just doing justice to his own potential.

‘Obviously, Travis Hunter is having a great season. He’s the favorite right now. I really think that it’s you know, what Ashton Jeanty has been doing at Boise State has been, you know, as impressive as it gets, week in and week out just putting up absolute numbers in the clinic and you know has Boise State and a real chance to be able to make it into the playoff this year.” said former NFL great Johnny Manziel acknowledging the one-man-army role of Jeanty for a rolled up Boise State.

Boise State surpassed BYU in the third installment of rankings released by the College Football Playoff selection committee on Tuesday. They are just in a position to get a first-round bye ahead of the Big 12 champion.

Against San Jose State, Jeanty lived up to his scale, posting another staggering performance with 32 carries for 159 yards. He is, in fact, responsible for Boise State’s 73 per cent rushing yards. With a few more games (including a potential playoff game) left on the card, the standout RB can also smash Barry Sanders’ 1,628 rushing yards mark. The Heisman trophy would only be a brownie point to his stellar resume. But the Boise State star is confident that he doesn’t let that extra point slip as well.

Ashton Jeanty and Travis Hunter have been clearly loggerheads, but the former is playing it cool. Hunter had his fair share of struggle during this season. When a brutal injury tested her patience, the CFB mogul couldn’t control his frustration. When asked about his take on Jeanty taking his top spot on the list, Hunter made a cheap comparison where he kept himself unapologetically above Jeanty for his rare dual-side playing ability. The rude statement over the ‘Outta pocket with RGIII’ didn’t go unnoticed by Jeanty.

In a later interview, the Prized Running Back, quite unsurprisingly, took the call to counter Travis’ comment. What Jeanty did was put the crown on Hunter’s head first, noting how incredible he was and how he was doing something unthinkable with his skill before quickly shifting the spotlight back to himself with an honest ‘I will win’ claim. What a smart, sportsman-like approach to handling controversy!

Jeanty said he took zero offense to what Hunter said because he just put forward his point of view, which is quite just.
