Is Greg McElroy right about Lane Kiffin, or is he being too harsh on the coach?

Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss made it to the top 15 CFB team through September! But amidst their competitors, their rank isn’t as prominent after their last heartbreaking loss to Kentucky. But for Kirby Smart and Georgia, they’re still one of the top teams despite a 3-1 record so far this season.

After Week 5 of the regular college football season, the CFB team’s rankings have shuffled. As Greg McElroy stated on a new YouTube episode on ESPN College Football on October 1, Alabama should be in the top 1 after their last victory against Georgia who fell to No. 5 from No. 2. Still the Bulldogs are in the top 5 because as McElroy said, “Georgia still got weapons. They still got dudes and they can still beat you in a bunch of different ways.” But Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss didn’t enjoy the same spotlight as Smart’s Dawgs.

Unlike Georgia who pulled a 13-12 upset over Kentucky in Week 3, luck didn’t favor the Rebels in the same way. After losing their last game 20-17 against Kentucky, Ole Miss has fallen to No. 15 in McElroy’s list of the top 15 college football teams in September. This loss at home also marked their first SEC defeat.

Still McElroy has high optimism for Lane Kiffin’s program as he said, “I believe Ole Miss still has firepower that is going to be very difficult for most teams to contain.” Indeed, Ole Miss have played their first month of the regular season in a dominant fashion with an overall 240-39 through five games.

Ole Miss needs to buckle up after Kentucky loss

After Saturday’s fall to Kentucky, Ole Miss now loses the Top 10 spot from No. 6 and dropped to No. 12 in the AP Poll. Following the game, Lane Kiffin expressed his disappointment at the Rebels’ missing opportunities in his weekly Zoom media session. He said, “Very discouraging outcome… Just a win that we could’ve come away with. In all areas, we had different chances to do that.”

The game against the Wildcats exposed the Rebels’ offensive failure where they were able to record just 353 yards. It even created havoc among fans, particularly in a superfan. But then, we’re talking about the team who nearly beat Georgia by just one point. Ole Miss will have to bounce back to stay relevant as a top CFB team. But challenge awaits as they gear up for another SEC showdown. This time, they’ll hit the road to face South Carolina in Columbia.
