Is Travis Hunter truly the best athlete in college football, or are the critics right to doubt him?

Travis Hunter is one of the best CFB players! Let’s just get that out there. We mean, most college football fans would agree, right? But there are always those who’ll try to rain on his parade.

Since he joined the Colorado Buffaloes last season, he has been nothing short of a sensation. Playing both offense and defense, he’s been quite the two-way phenom, competing for every major award out there. From the Jim Thorpe Award for cornerbacks to the Chuck Bednarik Award for the best defensive player, Hunter is on every watchlist. And now, the latest PFF rankings just confirmed what many already knew: Hunter is the top player in college football!

Buffaloes star Travis Hunter snagged the No. 1 spot, followed by Oklahoma’s RB Ollie Gordon II at No. 2. College football expert Max Chadwick even credits Hunter’s “athleticism” for this top ranking. However, Chadwick also points out, “Travis Hunter is neither the best wide receiver nor the best cornerback, but the fact that he’s exceptional at both positions at the same time makes him the best player in college football.”

Now, Chadwick has been consistent in his praise for Hunter as a two-way threat, but he also suggests that Hunter might benefit from focusing more on his cornerback role. Speaking on the Locked on Buffs podcast last month, Chadwick mentioned, “Focusing on one role could maximize his [Travis] impact and longevity.”

While Hunter’s stats are impressive—5 touchdowns, 57 catches, and 721 receiving yards on offense, along with 30 tackles and 3 interceptions on defense—they’re good, but not that great. And that’s why some people online have been offering up a bit of criticism, especially about his ranking.

Travis Hunter’s Stanford showdown gets roasted

The Pro Football Focus team stirred up quite a buzz online with their latest rankings released this Saturday. But they didn’t stop there. The PFF account reposted Max Chadwick’s take on Travis Hunter and posed an engaging question to fans: “Is Travis Hunter the best player in College Football?” Soon, the responses came flooding in, with many offering reasons why they think he isn’t.

The conversation quickly took a sharp turn, with some users unleashing criticism on the two-way star. One user jabbed, “This the same guy that got roasted by a Stanford WR,” referencing Hunter’s tough game last season. Another chimed in, “He got torched by a Stanford receiver for 3 TDs. So no!” and yet another added, “Bro got cooked all game by a 260-pound TE from Stanford.” Ouch! Looks like that game clearly left a mark. Last season, the Colorado Buffaloes had a 29-0 lead against Stanford, only to lose 46-43 after a dramatic second half. Stanford’s star WR Elic Ayomanor was the main in that comeback, even making a highlight-reel catch against Hunter. He even dragged the Buffs star to the end zone!

The internet hasn’t forgotten, and the criticism kept coming. One user bluntly stated, “Lol no he is not. I doubt he will even get his team to 6 wins.” Another offered a more balanced view, saying, “He’s really good at a lot of stuff. Isn’t really elite at anything. Is a top 10-15 player in CFB. But he isn’t #1 or close to it.” It seems Hunter has received a harsh reality check from the online community this time. Can the two-way star change the narrative soon?
