The New York Giants and the quarterback dilemma seem to be a never-ending conundrum. Joe Schoen himself is confused as to whether to bring a franchise-level draft pick (which may not be there) or get a free agent for two or three years to get by. In the draft, there are only a few decent options to choose from, those being Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward. They still have their defects. So, what can the Giants do in this situation?
Well, Cam Ward looks like a decent option to build around for the long term. He possesses the flair and technicalities to work in the Pro Arena. His stats in the last season were also quite impressive, as he notched up 4,313 yards at a 67.2% pass completion rate. A season in which the Hurricanes didn’t win anything, yet he made it to the Heisman Ceremony. Surely, he looks like the real deal, right?
Well, Giants GM Schoen does not really take stats to their value. For him, Cam Ward’s performance against California on the road stood out the most. “Some of it was, they were in a hole because of him, but he also was able to get them out of it, and they won the game because of him…Those are traits that you look for. The gotta-have-it moments… to bring a team back. When everybody in the building knows you’re going to throw it, that you can throw it. There are several quarterbacks in this draft that are like that, not just Cam.” He might have said the last statement to avoid unnecessary media attention. But here’s the thing.

Cam Ward looked quite prolific and had clutch moments in that game as he led his team to a win by 39-38. A thriller in which Ward tossed a pick-six interception and Miami trailed by 35-10 only to execute 4 consecutive inch-perfect drives as they won the game in dying minutes. Surely, anyone will be impressed by Ward when you produce these extraordinary moments. So, the question is: Is Cam Ward to the Giants a done deal?
Well, Ward will surely provide a vision for the long term if he joins the Giants. This is because, currently, they will only have Tommy DeVito on their QB roster. And with Schoen proclaiming that “he would look under every rock” in order to add a franchise-level quarterback to his roster. It seems Ward will surely provide the depth and has the potential for the team to be built around him. They have the 3rd pick in the NFL draft, so they still have a chance of landing him. However, there’s still a catch, and here’s why.
Aaron Rodgers going to the New York Giants?
The Giants will still need a veteran QB to provide the necessary platform for a rookie QB to develop. It will not only supplement the pressure but also provide an environment where he can learn from the more experienced individuals. So, it seems they are locking on a veteran target in Aaron Rodgers after it was reported that he will be released by the Jets in June. Pat McAfee provided an update about the Giants’ interest in the veteran QB.

“Matthew Stafford will stay with the Los Angeles Rams. The New York Giants are investigating all veteran quarterback options, including Aaron Rodgers. We will certainly investigate whether or not he can keep the same house. He doesn’t have to move. He actually already has this house in New Jersey, and he came to play for the New York Giants. It’ll be a different experience over here than it was for the New York Jets. I assume he’s not the only one. They’re also going to be peeking at Sam Darnold and others as the veteran quarterback market is now a little bit more wide open with Stafford staying.”

The New York Giants were initially very keen to sign Matthew Stafford, who won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams in the 2021 season. Surely, he would have been an impeccable choice as a veteran QB; however, the deal couldn’t proceed. This was because Stafford has signed an extension with the Rams now. That essentially means that the Giants are looking at other options like Aaron Rodgers and even Sam Darnold. However, the pursuit of Rodgers has been quite aggressive, as Rodgers’ representatives had reached out to the Giants to inquire about the interest.
