Is Georgia's recruiting empire crumbling as top talents like Shamari Earls eye Michigan?

Georgia may rank No. 3 in ESPN’s 2025 recruiting rankings. But Kirby Smart is watching some of his elite recruits of the 2025 class decommit, including 5-star DL Justus Terry and 4-star DL Christian Garrett. And according to experts, they could face a similar situation with their 4-star LB Shamari Earls.

Shamari Earls was committed to South Carolina before flipping his commitment to Georgia on July 7. But Sherrone Moore is coming into the picture to make a potential game-changer with the 2025 No. 7 LB. Hayes Fawcett joined Steve Wiltfong in a new YouTube episode on On3 Recruits on October 28 to discuss the possibility of Shamari Earls landing in Michigan. Wiltfong pointed out that Earls is “trending towards Michigan on the On3 RPM.” Fawcett added, “I’ve exchanged some text messages with him, and he arrived in Ann Arbor, and he tells me everything’s going good so far.”

Shamari Earls’ last visit to Ann Arbor marked his second unofficial visit. Michigan buckled up from their two consecutive losses to defeat Michigan State 24-17. But it was what Earls said before the game that raised the hope of the Wolverines. He said, “Michigan has just always been in the back of me and my family’s mind. I’ve got a good relationship with Coach Morgan; how good all the other staff is; how everybody in here just treats you so well… there’s something here.”

According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, Michigan has a 43.1% chance to flip Shamari Earls from Georgia. Given that he’s one of the top linebackers as well as the No. 65 overall prospect, losing him would reduce the Bulldogs from their current No. 2 standing in the SEC 2025 recruiting class. Still, his flip will be a huge win for Michigan.

Can Michigan win Shamari Earls’ commitment?

Michigan needs to think fast to find a worthy replacement for their star CB Will Johnson, who will be heading to the NFL next season. They’re still thin in the CB aspect, with only one 4-star commit in Jayden Sanders. If the Wolverines win Shamari Earls’ commitment, it would give them more hope for next season. If it happens, it’ll mark Earls’ third commitment this year. But Michigan is still proving they are an elite recruiter.

Despite undergoing a rough season, Sherrone Moore is still making waves on the recruitment front with the biggest win in 5-star OT Andrew Babalola. Right now, Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class ranks No. 12 in the nation with 17 commits, including 4-star commits Andrew Olesh, Ivan Taylor, and Andrew Marsh. We’ll see what happens further down the road. Michigan is set to face the ultimate challenge of the season against No. 1 Oregon on November 3. It’ll be a game to watch!
