It’s all hotchpotch situation now that the 2024 season is coming to an end. However, looks like Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs have managed to keep themselves afloat in the mess. For the fourth season in a row, they punched their ticket to the SEC Championship Game. Well, that’s something interesting as they carry the burden of two losses a bit better than Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels, who are now almost out of the race with three losses. However, Smart and Co.’s fate is now in the hands of Texas. Looks like the Georgia HC is waiting for that big day to take revenge on the CFP committee.
The Bulldogs (9-2, 6-2 SEC) postseason fate now hinges on the Dec. 7 showdown. Smart and the Bulldogs will be facing off the winner of next weekend’s Texas vs. Texas A&M clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. While we are yet to know the winner, who will be competing against Smart’s army, already the narratives have started to pour in. On the Paul Finebaum Show, Mike Griffith poured into his analysis circling Georgia’s fate, “Another team that I don’t think has really scored an impressive victory and yet it does protect I believe Georgia. In the event, Georgia loses the SEC Championship game because it provides somewhat of a buffer now.”

Well, Smart’s Bulldogs are now coming off strong with two losses. But again, they lost against ranked teams like Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels with this, they remain competitive in the SEC with a 6-2 conference record. However, in case Georgia loses the SEC championship game they will be on the same plane as Bama and Ole Miss since they have beaten the Dawgs “head-to-head.” That’s when Griffith raises an alarm for Smart, since even after beating Clemson 34-3, the Tigers are ahead of them. So here’s something the Georgia HC needs to worry a bit.
This situation hands a lot of power to Texas. “Georgia lose to Texas in the SEC Championship game in anything less than a blowout fashion now, if A&M makes it as a number 20 team and were to beat Georgia, I wonder if that may change the equation a little bit.” claimed the analyst. Well, that’s how have been since A&M being a lower-ranked team will “automatically get that seed.” More than keeping their playoff flames burning bright, Smart will have to win against Texas for another big reason.

Kirby Smart looks for a chance to seek revenge
Looks like the CFP rankings committee’s behavior left Smart with ruffled feathers. As they dropped the third edition of their rankings, the top spot went to Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks. The other programs to make it to the top five were Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, and Indiana. And what about Georgia who lifted the national championship trophy back to back two years, 2021 and 2022?
Well, Smart’s boys have been pushed further to the No.10 spot. And obviously, it did not sit well with the HC. The fact that he was apparently frustrated with the decision was seen in Smart’s media statement. An irritated Georgia HC stated, “It’s a hard one because I don’t know what they’re looking for.” To him, the selection committee’s benchmark came off as “unjust.”

It’s high time that Kirby Smart gets rid of that bitter feeling and instead takes a look at how far they have come. Going by the SEC power rankings, they are at No.2, leaving Alabama and Ole Miss far behind. So now the HC can take a chill pill and relax since even a loss would not matter that much in knocking them out of the playoff. But again, a lot depends on the November 30 winner.
