LSU head coach Brian Kelly had a lot of respect for the South Alabama Jaguars before their matchup, saying, “[South Alabama has] 28 FBS transfer portal players, 9 from SEC schools. This will be a great challenge for us. It’s a team that is coming in with nothing to lose, but also very capable in a lot of areas.” Turns out, Kelly’s approach of not underestimating opponents paid off, as LSU defeated the Jaguars 42-10. This victory helped LSU maintain their momentum after wins over UCLA, Nicholls Colonels, and South Carolina. And in all of these games, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier played a key role.
In Week 4, Nussmeier’s outstanding performance brought LSU to a 3-1 overall record. However, Week 5 wasn’t as smooth. During Saturday’s game, Nussmeier threw his second interception, which visibly frustrated coach Kelly. This was confirmed by a post from Sharief Ishaq, a sports reporter for WDSU-TV, who shared on X (formerly Twitter), “I’m no lip reader but Brian Kelly isn’t happy with Nussmeier after that second interception.”
Garrett Nussmeier becomes the 7th LSU QB to throw for over 400 yards in a game. In total LSU now has 12 games where a QB throws for 400+
Nine of those games have come since 2019 with 5 QB throwing for 400+ in a game since then. https://t.co/VZT9YPFRWp

Despite this rough moment, Nussmeier bounced back impressively. His performance in Week 5 was compared to none other than LSU legend Joe Burrow. Burrow famously threw for 493 yards against Oklahoma, which is second in LSU’s single-game history. He also set a record with 403 passing yards in just the first half of that game. This week, Nussmeier led No. 13 LSU to victory over South Alabama with a career-high 409 passing yards and two touchdowns. That made him the seventh quarterback in LSU history to throw for more than 400 yards in a game. What’s even more remarkable is that he delivered this performance after Kelly’s outburst, proving that the coach’s anger may have pushed him to excel.
LSU has seen great success with its quarterbacks over the years, from Heisman winner Jayden Daniels to first-overall pick Joe Burrow. Now, the question is: can Nussmeier carry on that proud legacy? He’s certainly showing signs he might.

There are some big shoes for Garrett Nussmeier to fill. This year, the junior red-shirt has started his fourth season as a starting QB at LSU. Well, the journey was not easy, as initially, he played as a backup quarterback for the Tigers. But he never gave up and he stayed loyal and didn’t discreetly look into the transfer portal. Revealing the reason behind it, he stated, “ I don’t think it was that hard of a decision for me. This is where I want to be. My roots are in this state. This is my home. It means something to me to represent LSU and to represent this state and these fans.” And we think he made the right decision. Well, you can see his progress in this season after making a decision to stay with the Tigers.

Saturday’s game against the Jaguars was another highlight for him. He started the fourth quarter with a bang, throwing a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kyren Lacy, which basically sealed the deal for LSU. And let’s not forget his incredible performance against UCLA last week. He completed 32 out of 43 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns, leading LSU to a 34-17 victory. He’s also got wins against South Carolina (36-33) and Nicholls (44-21), with the only loss coming against the tough USC Trojans.
