Can Kevin Sperry turn Florida State's fortunes around, or is this just another false dawn?

It seems like Florida State’s quarterback search is nearing its end. Following the loss of longstanding commitment Tramell Jones Jr. last week, Mike Norvell’s Florida State has been looking to add a quarterback to its 2025 class. Recently, the Seminoles were interested in four-star Carter Smith, but they were forced to change their course because it was anticipated that the Florida native would end up in Wisconsin. But now, there’s a strong feeling that the Noles can build momentum towards the 2025 dynasty. A dedication to excellence!

Kevin Sperry, a 4-star quarterback and Oklahoma recruit, declared he was switching to Florida State on Thursday night. Hayes Fawcett of On3 confirms this information in his X content as well with the caption, “All praise and glory to God, Go Noles!“. After committing to Oklahoma in March 2023, Sperry hasn’t visited Tallahassee in nearly 2 years. To put it mildly, this is unexpected. Really unexpected!

If you are not aware, in the previous 3 seasons, Sperry has represented three different high schools. After pledging to Oklahoma, Sperry began his school journey at Rock Hill High School in Texas then moved to Carl Albert High School for the campaign of 2023. Before his switch, the star QB was ranked 4th in Oklahoma’s 2025 class. This fall, he returned to Texas to complete his final year of school at Guyer High School.

His commitment to FSU has given Mike Norvell and the team the advantage in a late-cycle recruitment contest. Since the start of the regular campaign, FSU has lost seven commits from its 2025 class, as a result of its 1-9 record this fall. That being said, Sperry committed 11 days after the Noles fired three assistant coaches. With Sperry’s commitment, FSU now has six ESPN 300 commitments in a class that was ranked No. 40.

Still up for debate, though, is how well the standout quarterback performed at his school. Is he truly a top pick for FSU? His performance in high school will help you comprehend this.

Sperry’s team went 14-0 and won the state championship his junior year. He completed 131/191 passes for 2,564 yards, 31 TDs, and four fumbles. He also ran for 563 yards and 11 runs. That’s not all; there’s more to count. The Texan is returning to his home state to complete his senior year of high school. Guyer High School boasts an 8-3 record under his leadership. Sperry has thrown 131/234 passes this season, accumulating 2,026 yards and 21 touchdowns. He made 32/56 passes for 540 yards and 8 touchdowns over a two-game streak earlier this year.

Back on December 16, 2022, Sperry’s most recent attendance at FSU occurred. He saw FSU upset Gators in the regular season final while working around ahead of the staff of coaches at a training facility that fall. It remains to be seen if the star athlete will commit to playing for Mike Norvell’s Florida State team.
