How’s the fight for the No. 1 ATH in the country? Ask Steve Sarkisian and Matt Rhule, who had been competing for Michael Terry III’s commitment for months. While the final decision is shrouded in mystery, experts feel that Nebraska is still flirting with their chance to win Terry despite his inclination towards Texas.
In a new YouTube episode on On3 Recruits on November 14, Steve Wiltfong and Josh Newberg discussed the potential future college of 5-star athlete Michael Terry III. Wiltfong said, “Texas and Nebraska still battling for Michael Terry III out of San Antonio, Alamo Heights. I still like my On3 RPM in favor of the Longhorns for Michael Terry talking to the family this week.”

Texas is hunting for their fifth 5-star commit in Michael Terry III after compiling one of the top recruiting classes of 2025. They rank at No. 5 in the nation with 22 commits consisting of four 5-star commits, 11 4-star commits, and seven 3-star commits. As of On3’s RPM, Michael Terry has a 96.2% chance to commit to Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns.

The Texas native’s leaning towards the Longhorns comes from his appreciation for Texas’ coaching staff as well as the connection he has there with his ex-high school teammates. He also added, “Explaining what they are looking for and what they would look to get from me we’re good takeaways that helped me understand exactly what I’ll be doing and how I’ll handle working with different position coaches on getting development for multiple positions.” Terry was also present in Austin during the Texas Bash event in July. But Sarkisian’s program isn’t without fierce competition.
Nebraska’s relentless pursuit of Michael Terry III
“I do know that Nebraska is still very much alive,” Steve Wiltfong added. Michael Terry visited Lincoln for the third time this year after attending the Nebraska vs Colorado game which left him impressed. But it’s the consistent communication that’s keeping his interest alive. He said, “They were calling me a lot, almost every day. They’re just trying to get me up there, and they really set the bar high on the OV. They really showed me that they really want me up there.”

As Wiltfong reported, Nebraska is doing more than just calling on the phone. “Matt Rhule and Coach McGuire were recently down in San Antonio to see Michael Terry so the Huskers’ push continues.” It’s not without reason that Matt Rhule isn’t quitting his battle for the 6’2, 211-pounder given their poor 5-4 season. Michael Terry had a remarkable season in 2023 rushing for 995 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also racked up 564 receiving yards and 10 TDs to receive the District 13-5A MVP honors as a junior. We’ll see what goes further down the road as signing day happens in three weeks.
