Deion Sanders, by all accords, runs a tight ship up in Boulder. The enigma that he is himself actually preaches discipline and a straight-edge way to his players. Deion knows it takes professionalism to be a professional, not just acumen. At different junctures across his tenure with the Colorado Buffaloes, he’s reiterated one thing. Student-athletes are students first. There’s been a multitude of videos from behind the scenes where Deion is enforcing the importance of academics. But did he let his guard down around sons Shedeur and Shilo?

Less than 2% of collegiate athletes actually turn pro. Playing College Football, even at a relatively high level, is not a guarantee of future prospects. The perfect balancing act between academics and sport is, in many ways, the ultimate task for a CFB coach. Unfortunately, ‘Sanders’ on the back of your shirt can inadvertently cause you to ease up on this balance. It’s not as if there’s going to be a shortage of careers if football doesn’t work out. One former Colorado player, who played under Deion Sanders, accuses him of biased treatment of his sons.

Entering his first season ever coaching a team without Shedeur and Shilo, Deion made a new set of rules. These rules were relayed by SportsCentre on their IG. On first instinct, these rules are rather strict in an effort to introduce additional discipline. Apart from the more mellow ones based on dress code, one directive stands out. The post paraphrases Deion saying, “ If [the players] stop going to class, or get Fs, or Ds- The staff will take away part of your check.” This didn’t go down well with the ex-Buff mentioned above, who dropped a proverbial bomb in the comments section.

Former backup QB to Shedeur, Gavin Kuld, is the one in question. “lol his kids didn’t attend class at home or in person😂” he wrote. If that is indeed true, it implies a begrudging double standard. Deion Sanders has built the program back up on the foundations of parity and trust. This revelation undercuts his 2 biggest values. Shedeur and Shilo were perhaps never headed for a career down that vertical. But this isn’t a good enough reason. The timing of this rule being introduced doesn’t make for good semantics.

It’s important to realize that this may not be true at all. Gavin Kuld and Shedeur have a history of run-ins and controversy. This could be just another wrinkle. An attempt to throw dirt on a former adversary. Kuld came to Colorado from the JUCO level at the same time when the Sanders came in from Jackson State. He left after 1 year, under a cloud of recurring digs at Shedeur in particular.

Indictment on Deion Sanders or an attempt to undermine an old foe?

Gavin Kuld and Shedeur Sanders were colleagues in theory. But far from it in actuality. The two were locked into a bit of a cold war from the onset. Kuld once said, “The second I came in, [Shedeur] told the coaching staff that I would never have a chance to be the backup quarterback. That he could never coach me.” He claims to have been excluded for no apparent reason. “I saw him talk to the four quarterbacks all spring…what you doing, what you reading, you should read this…he was completely mute to me,” says Gavin Kuld, now of the Mars Hill Lions.

Kuld has also directly thrown shade at Shedeur for his NIL spending. Saying he spends it on cars and materialistic stuff rather than using it for good. Shedeur occasionally retaliated, too. In one instance where he seemingly reached the tipping point, he said, “I learned sometimes you have to take the high road. I’ll spare you only this 1 time. Y’all just interview anyone that leaves from Colorado just to get a negative look on the program.” To this, Kuld said, “Bro, what high road? What are u talking about spare me lol.”

The shade thrown at Deion Sanders’ latest decision needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. It’s inconspicuous how much truth there is to the allegation. Being in a public feud with a future NFL quarterback was perhaps the biggest moment Gavin Kuld has had under the Sun. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to suggest this is an instance of clout chasing. Deion has earned the benefit of the doubt. However, the introduction of such a rule after his sons have transcended the program doesn’t do much to thwart the accusation either.
