Broadcasters botching the speech is a very recurring event in the world of sports. But every time someone does it, it triggers an unbridled talking spree on the social media wall, and quite rightfully so. This time, the victim was none other than the renowned play-by-play commentator of CFB Chris Fowler. But he pulled the chain wrong in the Tennis territory.

The celebrated ESPN mogul officially joins the “unprepared” list of the broadcasters who fumbled at the biggest stage. Well, what happened? US Tennis star Madison Keys shocked the world by defeating the world number 2 Iga Swiatek (5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (8)) in a thrilling Australian Open clash that lasted for over two and a half hours. This victory ensured that Swiatek would feature in her second grand slam final appearance (the 2017 US Open was the first) and would go against Aryna Sabalenkar in the final on Saturday. Where did Fowler fumble, you may ask?

Well, announcing Keys’ victory, Fowler called it a title win. ”She has earned her first Aussie Open title, performance of your life,” said Fowler. The other commentator chimed in without re-scripting the mistake, ‘Best Tennis I have ever seen Madison Keyes play, so very happy for her. She broke through here 10 years ago as a 19-year-old and you see the emotions and the tears.”

Netizens couldn’t hold back their savage responses. Veterans and pundits go gaga over the authority to put him over the mic, where there have been a lot of tennis announcers waiting for their turn to take the charge. They accused the 62-year-old veteran of being the worst commentator on TV.

The botch worked as a bitter spoilsport into the 29-year-old’s life comes full circle moment at Melbourne Park. But Fowler could help ruin the party at the CFB final on Monday featuring a nail-biter dogfight between Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Rumors initially suggested that Fowler wouldn’t be available to call the Australian Open this year since he would have been busy with the College football championship stint. But somehow, the Denver native managed to do both and received some flakes in his way from both.

The ESPN play-caller was naturally very affiant and spontaneous in the mic, but that was not the case on Monday, by the way. Fowler was allegedly rooting for Ohio State while dishing out commentary on the big night. The controversy started to shape up when Fowler multiple times mentioned Notre Dame’s touchdown drive was instigated by a pass interference call. His tone and emphasis propelled the fans into thinking he was a classic Ohio State fan rather than an objective broadcaster.

While it’s not a crime to have a soft corner for a team as a fan, he is supposed to keep aside any bias in his live narrative over the TV. Also, the speculation found another ground as Kirk Herbstreit, his co-commentator, had a strong tie with the Buckeyes (played from 1989 to 1993) and was cracked up to be the same sinner as Fowler. It seemed a bit too absurd, but fans are the fans, regardless.

Fowler denied all the brickbats over his Notre Dame disdain before Monday night. Also, after the Irish failed to lift the trophy, he spoke highly of Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame.

But, his Aussie Open mistake reflects badly on his $30 million worth of career, whatsoever.
