There’s going to be emotions in these rivalry games, they said. And yes, here they are. Kalen DeBoer will remember his first Iron Bowl that not only exuded unsportsmanlike behaviors but also brought to light an even uglier judgment. But what less can you expect from heated rivalry games, especially in this acclaimed Alabama vs. Auburn rivalry?
With 6:50 remaining in the third quarter, a big scuffle crept into the Iron Bowl. As ESPN posted on X on November 30, “Tensions are high between Alabama and Auburn.” Things began to heat up after Auburn QB Payton Thorne shot an incomplete pass and his receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith blocked Alabama defensive back DeVonta Smith deep into the sidelines. This insinuated a physical showdown between the players from both teams.

Alabama led the rivalry game 6-28 at the time. And it was Smith who looked the most agitated as he stormed around the sidelines, entered the field, and took off his helmet, all the while displaying angry gestures. Following the chaos, the Crimson Tide DBs Malachi Moore and Smith both received unsportsmanlike conduct calls, resulting in a 15-yard penalty. And that’s where the ugly judgment comes in.

Despite the equal contribution of both teams to the fight, Auburn didn’t receive any penalties. Kalen DeBoer appeared enraged after the play because his mentality is “One play over there, it goes both ways.” Even ABC rules analyst Bill LeMonnier said, “I think both players (Smith and Lamber-Smith) should’ve been involved with the penalty. It’s time, too, to send a message that you need to control your team, and maybe it costs you in a disqualification.” He’s right. We’ve been seeing emotions spiraling out of control during games, and another prime example is what happened at ‘The Game.’

When the Wolverines delivered an upset 13-10 defeat to Ryan Day and the Buckeyes, they celebrated by placing their flag in the center of The Shoe. Unsurprisingly, it triggered Ohio State players, leading to an all-out brawl. Officials had to reportedly use pepper spray to break up the fight. Intense and almost dangerous. But then, what’s a rivalry game without some heat to it?
