It’s a tough day to be Billy Napier, as the thin sheet of ice he was walking on this entire season seems to have given way after the loss at the hands of the Texas A&M Aggies. There have been many speculations about his release from Gainesville, but so far, he continues to hold on to the reins of the Florida Gators. Unfortunately, the game against Texas could very likely have been his last game as HC for Florida since talks of his replacement have already begun. Whether he’ll survive through the 2024 season or be fired in the coming weeks is to be seen, but as of now, the Napier era has seemingly ended. As such, the potential candidates for his job are being considered and the name of Urban Meyer popped up from the mouth of Paul Finebaum, which has not been received well by the fans.

On the 15th September episode of ‘the Matt Barrie Show‘, renowned ESPN analyst, Paul Finebaum came on to the show to talk about the current state of the Florida Gators and how they’d be better off without Billy Napier for the rest of the season. Finebaum suggested Urban Meyer’s return to the world of college football in place of Napier and the fans hit back at the analyst for his extreme suggestion.

Back in 2010, Meyer stepped down from the position of head coach for the second time in less than a year in order to spend quality time with his family. This fan pointed out Meyer’s exit in response to Finebaum’s opinion on Napier’s replacement and wrote, “Urban Meyer?!? For one year in an “advisory role”? The guy who literally quit on UF twice? Dumbest idea in a while.” Moreover, Finebaum’s comments drew more fire to his name than he could’ve expected as the fans continued to lash out at the analyst.

The fans and their clap back to Finebaum’s opinions

Urban Meyer was a legend in college football who coached in Florida from the years of 2005-2010. In the span of 6 seasons, he led the Gators to 2 national championships and a Sugar Bowl win in 2009. The overall record of Meyer, which stands at 187-32, precedes his reputation, but the fans pointed out that there’s no way he’ll be coming back to coach anytime soon.

One fan pointed out the flaw in Finebaum’s logic and wrote, “Does ESPN not realize how Urban Meyer left Florida?”

Next, this fan stated their rather controversial opinion by stating that Meyer would not be the right guy for the job. The comment read, “Urban Meyer does not have the character to run a program of college kids. He has proven that time and again.”

A user commented, “we dont want Urban Liar….,” which is indicative of the bitter feelings of Florida fans since Meyer stated that he wouldn’t coach anymore but went on to still do it for another decade.

Lastly, this person would rather have Lane Kiffin or Chip Kelly in place of Napier instead of Meyer and commented, “Lane Kiffin….Chip Kelly….NOT Urban with his fake medical issue he left with, and all of his other issues.”

Thus, it is apparent that there’s still a lot of bad blood in the hearts of Florida fans over Meyer’s controversial exit, and would rather have any other coach don the hat than the former Jaguars’ coach.
