Houston’s quarterback situation is about to get a major shakeup as Connor Weighman, a former Texas A&M starter, moved to the Cougars for the 2025 season. Weighman, one of the most highly-recruited quarterbacks in the 2022 class, had an incredible journey when he was with the Aggies. However, his career has also been marked with inconsistency and injuries. So here’s the catch: can he reach his potential at the Cougars? College football analysts have already shared their point.
ESPN analyst Greg McElroy pointed out the transfer, expressing both high hopes and caution. “Weighman has all the tools. If I knew I was going to get that version of corner Weighman every week, I’d feel great about bringing him in and putting him in a position to be the starting quarterback.”

Weighman did indeed show his brilliance at Texas A&M, especially during the 2023 season when he passed for 2694 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was popular as a player for the Aggies, who led them to a 9-4 record in his first season as a starting player. Moving forward, McElroy also noted that while his excellence was evident, so was his inconsistency.
“There were ebbs and flows in his track record, and there is a bit of an injury history,” McElroy pointed out. What kind of injuries? Well, Weighman had not one but multiple injuries through his time at the Aggies. In 2023, he suffered a foot injury that ended his season midway, while in 2024, he faced a throwing shoulder sprain that kept him on the sidelines for a month. Adding to that, when he recovered, his performance was okayish, which ultimately led to freshman Marcel Reed later in the 024 season. How can it impact Houston’s offense?

Can Connor Weighman help Houston’s struggling offense?
While the addition of Weighman offers hope, Houston’s offense still faces significant challenges heading into 2025. Under Fritz’s guidance, the Cougars finished with a disappointing 4-8 record in 2024, and their passing game ranked among the worst in the nation, coming in 126th overall. With a new offensive coordinator in LSU’s Slade Nagle, Houston will need to figure out how to best utilize Weigman’s skills, especially given the lack of consistency in the Cougars’ offense last season.
Zeon Chriss, who started the final seven games for Houston, had an up-and-down year, completing just 63.4% of his passes for 824 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Chriss also underwent surgery this offseason, leaving the door open for Weigman to take over as the starting quarterback.

Despite these questions, Weighman’s return to his home state of Texas could provide the added motivation needed to succeed. However, it remains to be seen whether he can avoid injury and deliver the level of play that will help Houston get back on track after a tough season. The Cougars need a steady leader under center, and while Weighman has the potential, his past inconsistency and injury issues could continue to pose challenges for both him and the Houston program moving forward.
