3,471 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 2024. Quinn Ewers was nothing but an elite QB for the Longhorns, despite not playing his best football due to injury. Still, the 22-year-old had to wait and wait in the 2025 NFL Draft until the Dolphins finally showed some mercy in the seventh round when they picked him as the 231st overall pick. Often treated as a superstar QB during his collegiate career, Ewers’ woes do not seem to end anytime soon.
On May 10, while speaking about what led to his draft fall, the former Longhorns starting QB admitted, “I didn’t expect to fall as low as I did,” Ewers via Alainis Thames of the Associated Press. Putting the draft in the bag, Ewers also said that even though his draft did not go as expected, he will “have the same opportunity that everybody else does. There’s a lot of guys out there right now, and everyone’s fighting for the same job,” Ewers said. Now, while being optimistic is one thing but Ewers’ road to the NFL glory is not looking that easy.
A 5-star QB, who has proved himself in college football, it is no secret that Ewers is also prone to injuries, having missed at least two games in each of his three seasons at Texas. While many might not agree but veteran analysts Lance Zierlein and Louis Riddick also raised some serious concerns about Ewers’ “lethargic” style of play. “He often predetermines his target and throws into coverage instead of taking what the defense is offering,” Zierlein said after Miami picked him.

Now, the question is, did Ewers make a mistake rejecting some lucrative offers from multiple college programs while he still had one year of eligibility left? During the 2024 season, Ewers faced the deadliest blow in a torn oblique injury. Quinn, however, still pushed himself, but his consistent discomfort did not go unnoticed by NFL scouts. As a result, the 22-year-old was ranked as the 11th-most QB-faulted pressure, who carried a shaky 23.2% pressure-to-sack rate. Considering all these factors, Ewers’ NFL future does not look promising, to say the least.
FOX Sports analyst RJ Young painted a bleak picture for the 22-year-old. On The Number One College Football Show, he said, “That Kyle Shanahan, Mike McDaniel offense dudes is going to be b–t n——d open out in routes. But you’re also gonna get hung out to dry.” McDaniel is known as the mastermind behind the NFL’s most exciting offense. The franchise that Don Shula and Dan Marino built racked up 70 points.
The coach is a sponge when it comes to football knowledge and uses everything he has soaked up along his journey to turn Miami into an offensive juggernaut. However, in the 2024 season, the Dolphins’ offense couldn’t sustain drives with Tyler Huntley making his first start for the team. Along with this, the offense couldn’t move the pigskin. This made the coach upset, and he had signed up for changes. With this, he is going to push Ewers to the maximum limit. According to Young, Ewers might also face an offense like that of former St.Louis Rams offensive coordinator Mike Martz.
“Mark Bulger, Kurt Warner …just getting walloped, just inked everywhere you go. Shoulders into sternums back before we knew what targeting was dudes running butt naked open because the offense was blitz.” Martz’s offensive philosophy is known for its aggressive, pass-heavy style. But if Ewers thinks that’s all, here comes another hurdle.
Quinn Ewers gets handed a harsh price tag for Round 7 dip
Ewers is officially beginning his NFL journey with the Miami Dolphins ahead of the start of rookie minicamp. Now, what about the contract? Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Dolphins and Ewers agreed to terms on a four-year rookie deal. The four-year contract is worth approximately $4.31 million – $4.33 million. That’s when a big regret must be biting Ewers from within. The reason? Making a big blunder when it came to financial decisions.

The 22-year-old had college football programs swarming around him as he had one year of college eligibility left. To seal the deal, Ewers was even offered an $8 million NIL offer. But he had set out his hands to catch the stars in the pro league. That’s when the universe made him learn a lesson the hard way. After falling all the way to Round 7, Ewers is only guaranteed $131,576, his signing bonus. That’s how he made a hefty amount of $7.2 million just slip away. And how could Sarkisian see his favorite in so much pain?

Throughout the 2024 season, the Longhorns’ head coach faced a double-edged sword because of his indecisiveness about his quarterbacks. But Sarkisian kept rooting for Quinn Ewers more as compared to Arch Manning. Now that Ewers is catching side eyes, Coach Sark broke the silence. “Everybody has got a comment about a kid who leaves a school and goes to another school for more money…Sometimes, I just wonder. Who are we to judge and criticize a young man who’s making a decision on his future, who’s only done things the right way, to the best of his ability, gave everything to our program?” May Ewers bank more than money—may he bank legacy.
