Cam Ward: What is the first thing that crosses your mind when we bring out this name? Exceptional arm talent? Slightly Mahomes-ish with the arm angles and game screens? Or a fraud quarterback who let his team fall apart in one of the most crucial games for Mario Cristobal? Now and then, a team climbs out of the everglades, fighting off low tier competition and crowing itself “the best team ever”. Such was the story of the Hurricanes, but there was a silver lining. Albeit Cristobal and his crew failed to beat any top opponents, their quarterback game was something no one could complain about. So what Cam Ward left Canes to fall apart against Iowa State? Find us another QB with this much raw talent and a QBR of 88.7 (2nd in the class) in the 2025 draft and maybe we could talk.

Climbing out of irrelevancy and making it to the Heisman and the No.1 pick in the mock draft takes talent and Ward has all of it – however – Much like in every Cinderella story, there is always a Lady Tremaine set to ruin the grand scheme. For Cam Ward? There’s 2 Lady Tremaine. In a not so recent interview with Nola.com, Cam pointed out, “It would be a dream of mine to play for them, if I get a chance someday.” Like who wouldn’t want to play for Kellen Moore? With his hire, Saints did a real shake up. Now you have 2 explosive WRs: Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. Adding Ward to the roster is the perfect glaze this cake needs, but there is a problem.

As crazy as Mel Kiper Jr looks, his draft lists are always far more crazier. So, lo-and-behold, Jaxson Dart on the No.9 spot but not with any random NFL team – no sir, it’s the Saints. “He has the skill-set, he certainly has the ability to make throws, accurate throws every level… he’d kill a defense with his legs,” Kiper pointed out. Although many would call Dart “not a first rounder” – he still someone has managed to sneak into almost every single Top 10 Mock list we have seen.

Much of it stems from how good his combine results were and although you could argue that Dart has massive decision-making problems (a quick glimpse into the Gators or LSU game) – which young quarterback doesn’t? Right now, Dart is like your maxed out Madden character just waiting to get to the Bowl.

All in all, this puts a dent on the Ward X Saints romance. With New Orleans having the 9th pick of the draft, getting to Ward means trading up and with how successful the Titans storyline has been, it’s doubtful Tennessee would let Ward go after how bad their bet with Brandon Allen went.

You know what they say, right? Some dreams remain dreams. Now coming to the 2nd Lady Tremaine in Ward’s Cinderella story – there is one thing that Kiper pointed out which we couldn’t exactly “digest.”

The true No.1 Draft Pick

Imagine this: you crawl out of the mud as a zero star QB from Incarnate Word, then take Miami to their first ever 10 win season in the last 5 years. And what does Mel Kiper do when asked who would be the better projected QB? “I’m gonna go Shedeur Sanders… I’ve had him No.1 QB all along.”

There is no denying that Shedeur Sanders is one of the best talents we have seen in recent years. If you are judging him based on his out of the gridiron “shenanigans” then you are not doing him justice. 2 years with the Buffs with a horrendous offensive line and this guy still made massive plays. As Kiper points out, “He dealt with NFL conditions. … You can win big in the NFL going about your business like Shedeur Sanders does.”

This guy took a beating – got up – threw a Hail Mary to get an OT win for the Buffs. Take the ego, the bling, all aside – in terms of pure raw talent vs raw talent competition: Ward and Shedeur are both neck to neck. On one side, you have a QB who was practically nothing and now a superstar, and on the other side, you have a QB who was forever destined for greatness.
