Two weeks ago, the Ole Miss Rebels put an oxygen mask on Georgia’s face and nearly shortened their playoff hopes. Lane Kiffin‘s guys are thriving with ninth place in the CFP rankings and are totally on the way to entering the 12-team playoffs. All that and they still can’t afford to lose their next game against the Gators. The reason? There are still five teams riding in the same boat as the Rebels. An 8-3 can dismantle playoff hopes! And the one person who holds all the power to do that is our boy DJ Lagway! Well, no need to worry, Lane Kiffin and boys, as our experts cracked a way to keep him ashore! Let’s hear it from them.
On the November 23rd episode of The Locked on Ole Miss show, Steven Willis talked with Tom Vanderford about the upcoming game between Ole Miss and Florida Gators. Willis answered the burning question in college football right now. Can Ole Miss’s defensive line disrupt Florida’s offense? The answer is?ADVERTISEMENT

“Yeah, if Ole Miss can control the run game. This is going to be a very important piece. If Ole Miss can control the run game and the short passing game to force obvious passing situations to happen on third down to where Prince Umanmielen, Allen, and Suntarine Perkins can tee off on DJ Lagway, rush the quarterback, Florida is in a little bit of trouble If that happens,” Willis said.
However, not everything is going to be that simple. Of course, you want Florida’s offense to go three and out in an ideal scenario. But we have already seen a blueprint of how an offense can get to the Rebels. “One thing to pay attention to is Florida stays on schedule, 2nd and 6, and 3rd and 2, first down, 2nd and 6, and 3rd and 2. That happens; you get into a little bit of a routine, similar to what Kentucky was able to do against Ole Miss earlier in the season. So it’s going to be important to put Florida into lost yard situations and long yard situations,” Willis further said.
The main reason why Kentucky frustrated Lane Kiffin’s team was their ability to have long drives. Remember how Ole Miss learned the hard way that defense wins the games—or in their game against Kentucky, loses them! Their defense against Kentucky was like a busted screen door on a stormy day, letting big plays slip through at the most disastrous times. First, when Kentucky had a 4th and 7 late in the game, Ole Miss Rebels should have forced a change of possession. But nope! Brock Vandagriff lobbed a 63-yard bomb down to Barion Brown. Then Kentucky just bombarded into the endzone like they owned it.
However, even if the Gators’ offense figures it out, it may not be as similar as the Kentucky game. “One thing to remember in this football game that’s different from Kentucky is that nine out of the 11 series that Florida had against LSU last weekend were less than five plays. They need explosive plays to score, they have trouble driving the ba*l, and DJ Lagway, At this point in his career, throws the ball downfield, Deep passes outside the numbers, nothing really in the middle of the field, so almost as a good chance to affect this game.”

Analysts here warned Ole Miss to do the same thing against the Gators by reversing the picture. For Florida, it all comes down to Lagway, and Kiffin may have a way to neutralize him.

Although our guy is a Bal*er-five-star talent, Superman vibes, the whole package, but here’s a catch: Superman had kryptonite and DJ? His injury! Don’t tell me you forgot his early-season injury. Yeah, the darkest day for Florida, and while Lagway’s bounced back, it’s obvious he’s not in his actual form.
Without him, Florida’s O-line looks like Swiss cheese! the trenches? A liability. Now an analyst, Ari Wasserman, from until Saturday, took a jab at Billy Napier’s crew: “Other than Lagway, Florida’s roster doesn’t inspire much confidence.” What does that mean? The Gators are DJ or bust. If Ole Miss puts on an aggressive show, Lagway’s going to be chasing breath for his life, and that will end up resulting in rushed throws, bad reads, and turnovers. Everything points to a total disaster.
Besides that, Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart is out there cool and composed. He’s not dropping dimes like Lagway, but he just doesn’t need that. They have a crushing O-line complimenting him, and he knows how to move his boys. While it’s necessary to keep in mind that Florida is freshly out of a 27-16 win over the Tigers, they have momentum, but Ole Miss just needs to be more patient and disciplined to seal the deal.
