Did Oklahoma's Brent Venables underestimate Texas, or is the Sooners' era of dominance truly over?

Texas just crushed Oklahoma in one of the biggest defeats in the Red River Rivalry series. The Sooners entered Week 7’s game against No. 1 Texas as the No. 18 seed in the CFB. But the game proved that they’re no match for Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns.

Oklahoma’s plight at the Cotton Bowl in Saturday’s game brought out remorse in their head coach. Following the embarrassing 34-3 defeat, the Sooners HC Brent Venables made a statement as shared in an X post on October 13. He said, “Disappointed obviously in the outcome. We couldn’t sustain some of the momentum we had in the first quarter.”

The Sooners struggled from beginning to end in the Red River Rivalry as Texas delivered a severe blow as a revenge from last year’s loss. But they had a first great impression when Billy Bowman picked off a pass by Texas’ Quinn Ewers on the third offensive play of the first quarter to gain the football in the Longhorns’ territory. DL Ethan Downs also threatened the Longhorns’ offense by picking up a sack on the first play.

Despite the edge, Oklahoma messed up when kicker Tyler Keltner’s 44-yard field goal went wide. It was also in the first quarter that true freshman QB Michael Hawkins Jr. made a complete 12-yard pass to Brenen Thompson, completing 4 of 7 passes for 35 yards in the first quarter. Keltner then kicked a 42-yard field goal to score the game’s first points, their only points as Texas showed their dominance starting from the second quarter.

Texas shows why they’re No. 1

Texas found momentum in the second quarter with Quinn Ewers opening their score with a 7-yard TD pass to Gunnar Helm. Silas Bolden also scored a touchdown after recovering the fumble in the end zone. The Longhorns secured their third TD with Quintrevious Wisner’s 43-yard TD run giving Texas a 21-3 lead in the first half. The third quarter added 3 points to Texas with a 41-yard field goal by Bert Auburn who also made another 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Ewers wrapped up the final game score with his last 1-yard TD run, completing 20 of 29 passes for 199 yards and one passing TD to win the Red River Rivalry.

Have an interesting take?

The 34-5 result gave Texas their fourth largest win in the rivalry series with 49-0 in 2022 as No. 1. Texas now moves closer to becoming a CFP team and who knows, the Natty isn’t something that’s out of reach for them. Oklahoma is going to see themselves being demoted from the AP Poll ranking after this huge loss as they advance 4-2 into the season.
