Who’s going to lose—the USC Trojans or LSU Tigers? Well, we’re only in the third quarter, so it’s still up in the air. What we do know is that DirecTV lost millions of trust. The media took a major hit before this highly anticipated game even began.
On Sunday, every college football fan was ready to watch the game on ABC. But just as the game was about to kick off, a blackout hit around 7 PM ET. Total buzzkill, right? But this wasn’t just a one-off glitch. There’s a bigger issue that’s been brewing behind the scenes.
Reports suggest the blackout happened because of an ongoing dispute between Disney and DirecTV. Disney’s carrier fees seem to be too high for DirecTV’s liking. DirecTV says they’re more interested in “tailored packages,” which is part of their battle with Disney. But instead of working things out quietly, DirecTV decided to take it out on viewers, cutting off access for about 11 million subscribers. Ouch, DirecTV. That’s a rough move.

@DIRECTV – this is complete BS. Losing access to ESPN in the middle of a prime time broadcast on Sunday evening is unacceptable. In addition, I cannot watch the Braves/Phillies game, or the LSU/USC football game. Terrible customer experience.

Interestingly, this blackout isn’t affecting everyone. In areas where Disney doesn’t own ABC, viewers can still catch the game. But for millions of DirecTV subscribers, it’s all about waiting and hoping.

For now, negotiations are still ongoing, and fans are hoping things resolve soon. Even Disney says they’re open to talks and willing to offer DirecTV some “flexibility.” But until they strike a deal, many fans are anxiously wondering if they’ll be able to catch Week 2 of college football. Meanwhile, some are frustrated over the current scenario.

The internet is buzzing with outrage over DirecTV’s latest move. One sports fan vented, “This is complete BS. Losing access to ESPN during a prime-time broadcast on Sunday is unacceptable. Plus, I can’t watch the Braves/Phillies game or the LSU/USC football game. Terrible customer experience.” Well, it’s hard not to sympathize. Along with the Phillies-Braves MLB game, tennis fans are also missing out as the US Open on ESPN2 is now part of the blackout.

Another fan on X summed up the frustration perfectly: “I’m spending an arm and a leg for DirecTV Stream every month, and the ABC channel for the LSU game isn’t working. Lmao.” Some people are even turning to humor to cope. One user shared a meme captioned, “DirecTV cutting ESPN and ABC before the #USC vs #LSU game (laughing emoji).” Well, it showed things turning catastrophic for all. The emotion is true though, given LSU vs. USC game has everyone hyped. Especially with both teams tied 1-1 in past matchups. Now, with so much on the line, the blackout couldn’t have come at a worse time.
However, even amidst the tension, some fans are not losing their humor sense. One fan wrote, “DirecTV loses ABC right before kickoff of LSU-USC. Non-DirecTV viewers are watching America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC. We’re all losers.” Hopefully, this mess gets sorted out before more major games get caught in the crossfire.
