Jack Kiser and his fiancée Meghan Chan are high school lovebirds. The linebacker had long planned his proposal; finally, the couple had a lifetime moment near the southern tip of Manhattan. Kiser got down on one knee and popped the question during Notre Dame’s annual media trip to New York in July.

Yes, he did propose on national television. The unique and one-of-a-kind proposal was captured by a Fighting Irish Media film crew who was hiding near the location. He made their proposal a more special and unforgettable moment for the couple.

But planning all this wasn’t an easy task. Kiser had to get important permission to execute his proposal. The South Bend Tribune reported his struggle behind his big day: “Probably in mid-June, I went and asked Freeman and talked to Katy (Lonergan), our media relations person, just to see, ‘Is this something that is even doable?” Kiser said. He was sure that he wanted to propose to his longtime girlfriend; he not only had to wait for the right time, but having filmed and streamed nationally took extra effort and convincing.

He added, “Fortunately, she was in New York City and not here. I would say almost everybody around the football building knew about it. And it was something a lot of people around the facility helped me with. A lot of the operations people, obviously Coach Freeman. A lot of the players helped me with it. I’d kind of bounce ideas off them and then solidify plans.” His statement reflects the bond he shares with his coaches and teammates, especially the respect he holds for Freeman.
