That BYU bowl loss? Yeah, it’s a tough one for the Buffs. But hey, new year, new chances, right? The past stings, but those old legacies and traditions? They remain embedded within you, propelling you towards progress. As they say, ‘Old habits die hard,’ and Deion Sanders is living proof. He’s embracing this journey, carrying on the legacy in true Prime Time fashion. Sure, his fiery spirit might sometimes land him in hot water, yet it is an integral part of the growth process. Time to shake it off and come back stronger.
Deion Sanders is all about having fun and trying new things, but this time he’s reflecting on the legacy his stepdad, Willie J. Knight, introduced to him. He’s starting the new year by continuing his stepfather’s fishing tradition with his fishing buddy, Jennifer Young. Coach Prime summed it all up perfectly on his IG, saying, “Lord, I thank you for my late stepfather, who introduced me to fishing. We fished with cane poles, but nevertheless we fished. Now I’m fishing with @abugarcia_fishing on my own lakes. @jayyo26 God is INCREDIBLE.
During his coaching days at Jackson State, Deion Sanders found a lake near the airport and did something that led to his arrest. Now talking about the hilarious incident, he said, “So, I pull my truck way back up in there and, oh, my God. I’m by myself. I had this little boat in the back of my truck, and I put it in the lake, fishing my b–t off, and I could see the bass coming to hit the lure—eating it alive. I mean, I’m catching fish left and right.” Now this caught the attention of a local police officer, who even told him that he was trespassing. But then who cares, and that’s how Deion Sanders ended up getting arrested.

It’s clear that Deion Sanders holds his legacy close, especially when it comes to his stepdad, who has a special place in his heart. Coach Prime’s love and respect for him go beyond words. And that’s quite evident from his last year’s Father’s Day tribute: “had the best stepfather in the world, Willie J. I know they call you stepfather because you step in and affiliate in the gap. But thank you all. Sometimes you never get a respect you deserve or desire but I thank you all.”
Well, Deion Sanders is fortunate to have had not one but two fathers who loved him deeply.
‘Deion Sanders’ is a legacy forged by two fathers
The strong person you see today had a dark past that made him resilient and kind. Moreover, every great leader has a guiding force, and Deion Sanders was lucky enough to have two. Despite divorcing Coach Prime’s mother when he was only two, Mims Sanders still had a significant impact on his son’s life. He filled Prime Time’s life with instilling values like grit, resilience, and unshakable integrity. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1993 from a brain tumor, but even from afar, his influence shaped the unstoppable drive that defines Coach Prime today.

After Deion Sanders’ biological father was no longer around, his stepfather, Willie J. Knight, filled the empty void in a big way. Willie didn’t just play the role of a stepdad; he became the father figure for Coach Prime, which he had needed since the age of eight. Moreover, Willie not just comforted Coach Prime but also gave Mama Connie stability and support. It’s because of Willie Knight that we see a leader in Deion Sanders today.
It’s evident that Coach Prime’s early life was full of ups and downs. But with all that chaos, he also received the biggest blessing in the form of his father. Moreover, in many instances, Coach Prime got emotional while talking about his father, reflecting on how the unique influences of both his fathers shaped him.

He said, “My stepfather Willie J Knight, my biological father, Daddy Sanders he’s the Prime side of me and stepfathers to Deion side of me. You got to be careful what you show your kids at home because they emulate and imitate all those thing.” Those are the values Coach Prime passed down to his kids: love, respect, and the ability to bounce back.
