The year 2024 marked the season of grand return. The return of the New England Patriots man Bill Belichick. Thanks to the University of North Carolina, college football fans now have someone who talked the talk and walked the walk in the NFL. But guess what? It’s not going to be a smooth ride for Belichick. And who is going to haunt the ex-NFL HC? It’s none other than Colorado Buffaloes HC Deion Sanders. After all, Coach Prime has given his blood, sweat, and tears into the Buffs program and flipped the narrative. Now it’s impossible to ignore Colorado. That’s how Deion has bolstered them up. And it goes without saying that it has to do a lot outside of the recruiting playbook.
This year, in January, Belichick parted ways with the New England Patriots. Well, the man carries some serious controversies. But so what? Not to forget, Belichick is also known as a 6-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots and 3-time AP NFL Coach of the Year. This was enticing enough for the Tar Heels to make him their next HC. That brought an end to Mack Brown’s role as the North Carolina HC.
But if Belichick thinks that he will just pick up a magic wand and cast a spell to improve the program, here is some heads-up. On the All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson, National College Football analyst RJ Young raised an alarm for the ex-NFL HC. “I think the problem that you’re going to run into and I’m take it back to just the sport here can Bill Belichick do in two years what Deion Sanders has done in two years?” questioned Young.

Before Deion stepped in Boulder in 2023, the Buffs were in a deep mess. In 2022, their overall record was 1-11. With Coach Prime at the helm, it slightly got better to 4-8 the next year. However, by this season Deion has mended the loopholes as the Buffs ended the 2024 season with a 9-3 overall record. Along with that, they got an added bonus as they produced a Heisman winner, their dual-threat Travis Hunter. But what might have worked in the Buffs HC’s favor? How brilliantly Deion portrayed the program.
As Young stated, “How much is this man willing to sell your program because that has been the thing that I really didn’t like about watching all these New England Patriots teams. They’re not fun and you need to be fun and open.” So, more than brushing up his recruiting strategy, probably Belichick will have to work on how to smile. “Man gonna have to smile he gonna have to smile he gonna have to tell some jokes going to have to be jovial,” suggested Young. Looks like Belichick’s mood is going to change for the better.

How Tar Heels tries to keep the Bill Belichick legacy alive
It has not even been a month since the Tar Heels hired Belichick as their new HC. They are now planning to reel in another coach carrying the NFL HC’s bloodline. That’s none other than Bill Belichick’s son, Steve. As per the reports, Steve is going to join North Carolina as a defensive coordinator. Like father, like son, he too had some exposure to the NFL.
As a former lacrosse and football player for Rutgers, Belichick’s son joined his father’s program as a defensive assistant in 2012. The tenure between 2016 and 2023 marked an important period for Steve. He worked as a defensive positions coach, specializing in defensive backs, safeties, and outside linebackers. But after his father parted ways with the New England Patriots, he too moved out and joined Washington as the defensive coordinator on February 6.

This chapter has been a successful one for Steve Belichick. Before him, the Washington Huskies found themselves in the 99th rank in total defense. With his talents, in 2024, the program moved up the charts and got themselves the 26th rank. As per the reports, Bill Belichick’s son will be joining North Carolina after the Sun Bowl on December 31.
