Deion Sanders backing RGIII—Is ESPN losing touch with real talent and heart?

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders is in sync with Robert Griffin III’s pain. According to reports, the former NFL quarterback has been fired from ESPN’s analyst role. After this setback, Griffin III took to X to share what he had been going through. The post’s tone is mainly toward the acquaintances who have last emerged as backstabbers.

And excluding Deion, no one else can genuinely comprehend Griffin’s challenges as he can, and hence, the Buffs HC took a stand. Now that Griffin III has lost his post, the college football world has lost a Pro-Deion Sanders commentator.

Griffin III’s betrayal strikes a chord with Deion

The Heisman Trophy winner, Griffin III, got a break from his football career and was hired for the analyst role by ESPN in 2021. However, unlike football, his stint behind the mic has been short-lived. With two years remaining on his contract, the former QB has been fired by ESPN, as confirmed by Andrew Marchand. This has been no less than a heartbreak as Griffin III wrote, “There are people in your circle saying they want you to win, but doing everything they can to make you lose. Don’t be afraid to cut people off when they keep handing you the scissors.” This resonated with Deion, who re-shared the tweet with the caption, “Yes Lawd!”

But why does Griffin’s post have the flavor of “betrayal on the side“? As per the reports, Marchand had agreed to Griffin’s seven-figure annual salary, which exceeded $1 million annually, assuring that “will be honored.” But the assurance now turns out to be clear abandonment. Jason Kelce, an ex-Philadelphia Eagles center, has replaced the QB legend. And why does Griffin’s departure from ESPN affect Deion? After all, he had been Coach Prime’s and the Buffs’ greatest advocate.

Strong leaders often have their share of fans and haters. In Deion’s case, there have been extremities, too. On one hand, analyst Paul Finebaum tried every way to break the Buffs’ morale by claiming that his tribe “do not matter” and is “irrelevant” in college football. Conversely, Griffin III had laid out a safety net for Deion’s program. As Finebaum continued to strip off Colorado, the QB legend highlighted how, this season, the Buffs would unleash their full potential.

As per Griffin III, the Buffs’ towering confidence to stand out of the crowd would usher in tremendous success, “Coach Prime is building something at Colorado and as an analyst, I don’t think we should be trying to kick him and his team down because they are confident and believe in themselves. They are great for College Football because they are different. Different might make people uncomfortable, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.”

Plus, Finebaum tossed away Shedeur’s confidence about the “Super Bowl” with his claim, “you are an easy win nowadays.” This did not sit well with Griffin III, who retaliated, claiming, “Shedeur Sanders stated that Colorado is everyone’s Super Bowl game when they play them. HE IS CORRECT.” Now that he has been shown the door, it leaves the Buffs fam short of one enthusiastic hype man.
