Did Deion Sanders overreact to Travis Hunter's Heisman pose, or was it justified?

One thing about Travis Hunter is he walks the talk, or pose in this case! Colorado won their third consecutive victory as they dominated UCF 48-21 in Week 5. Following the game, a happy head coach addressed the media but his happiness was tainted when he was asked about Travis Hunter making the Heisman pose. But there’s a silver lining to it.

During his post-game conference speech on September 29 as shared by Hollywood Wagner on YouTube, Deion Sanders conceded that they initially slammed the two-way star’s viral pose. Given that Travis Hunter is about to add another 100+ receiving yards per game and is just shy of 11 yards, the HC wished he could play it under the radar without becoming a target.

The play happened when Colorado was on a 34-14 lead against the Knights. Travis Hunter executed a diving interception on UCF QB KJ Jefferson. After the play was dead, the Buffs sensation ran to the end zone to strike the Heisman pose. He said, “We were really upset because they just told me he needed 10 more yards to consistently have his 100 yards streak and we were going to try to get it to him but we didn’t want to be outlandish or do anything crazy to provoke ignorance.

The Heisman pose made him a huge target. He broke his season 100+-yard streak with 89 yards for seven catches and one touchdown. But as Deion Sanders observed, “But Travis is okay with it. He’s not playing for that. He’s just playing for, ‘I want to be one of the best players in college football’ and I think he is.” Travis Hunter is, no doubt, the best college football player in the world.

Travis Hunter is the best college football player

Even Coach JB will tell you that. He might be sour on anything that has to do with Colorado but he does admit that Travis Hunter is the best player in college football, if not the NFL! The 21-year-old has mastered the art of both offense and defense winning the Paul Hornung Award for the most versatile player in 2023. This season, his excellence shone right from their season opener against NDSU where he stunned fans with his unrivaled and unreal catches in tight coverages.

Travis Hunter isn’t your regular Heisman Trophy contender. But somehow, he’s there because of his stats so far – 46 catches for 561 yards and six TDs in five games. Since 2000, the 20 Heisman winners are QBs from elite teams contending for a National title. But Hunter is neither a QB nor comes from a playoff team. Still, Colorado has a chance to prove themselves as they’ve now bagged last season’s number of wins in contrast to one loss. Hopefully, it won’t be last season’s record on replay when they meet Big 12 opponent No. 23 Kansas State up next.
