Cowboys fans dream of a world where Jerry Jones just owns the team and lets someone else who is less emotionally invested, handle the GM duties. But let us be real and accept that is just wishful thinking. Well, the idea of Deion Sanders finally coming to the NFL and leading the Cowboys is gaining traction, but it all hinges on one question: Is the Buffaloes HC willing to leave Colorado and give up his ultimate dream for the Dallas spotlight? Just last week during an interview on GMA3, the Buffs HC revealed his only condition to coach an NFL team. “The only way I would consider it is to coach my sons,” Sanders said.

Let’s do a speedrun of everything that’s happened in the past few days. Jerry directly spoke to Deion about the vacancy. Deion then told Adam Schefter he’s “intrigued,” albeit he reinstated his happiness in Boulder. This was enough to get the collective football sphere’s juices flowing, so to speak. Schefter outwardly said on The PatMcAfee Show he thinks it’s a “possibility.” Fast-forward to today, Cowboys insider Ed Werder dropped a proverbial bomb on X.

“Regarding Deion Sanders: I’m being told that he would almost certainly accept if Jerry Jones offers to make him the next #Cowboys head coach, that those around him are encouraging him to pursue it, and that Jones is enamored with the idea,” he said. Let’s suspend disbelief and say it is true, that Deion will indeed be open to switching Boulder for Arlington. How far is Jerry willing to go for him?

This notion was also floated by revered CFB insider Bruce Feldman of FOX and the Athletic. In an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Feldman and the show’s namesake discussed affairs pertaining to Deion Sanders and the Cowboys. When asked, “What is Deion Sanders’ status?” a ponderous Feldman opened with a thought that possibly implies the aforementioned reporting by Werder is based in truth. I’m curious how much Jerry Jones would want him back in Dallas,” said Bruce Feldman. There is a school of thought that Jerry won’t pull the trigger on this hire even if it was available.

Jerry Jones revels in being the face of the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoys the pageantry and fame that comes with owning the biggest sports team in the country. Jerry has been indicted for years as someone who gives precedence to his and the Cowboys’ image off the field rather than actual footballing matters. This creates a conundrum for him.

If Deion steps into the role, he’s inadvertently going to steal the spotlight. Jerry has often been projected as someone who is unwilling to cede his status, even if it comes at the expense of success. Add to that, he can be frugal in terms of spending on coaches. He’s shown that by letting McCarthy’s contract run out, which is almost unheard of. Deion commands a massive buyout clause, which could deter Jerry Jones. Plus, there are a couple more roadblocks.

Deion Sanders has no conspicuous route to fulfilling his dream at the Cowboys

Deion Sanders has stated at multiple junctures that he wishes to continue coaching his sons, Shedeur and Shilo. Well, he’s been coaching his sons every step of the way, from Jackson State to Colorado. Now, coaching alongside Shilo in the NFL wouldn’t be a problem. The problem is that the Cowboys have no tangible route to landing Shedeur. He’s a consensus top 5 pick, conservatively. The Cowboys hold the 12th pick in the draft. As much maneuvering as they do, ascending that many spots is quite unfathomable. Even if they were, there’s a Dak Prescott-shaped cloud looming over this ordeal.

Of all the decisions Jerry made in the preseason, the most abiding one was the very last one he made. On the eve of the NFL season beginning, QB1 Dak Prescott signed the most lucrative contract in league history. 4 years, $240 million! Plus a no-trade clause for good measure. Rich Eisen put it straightforwardly. “If [Deion Sanders] takes the Cowboys job, he would not be coaching his son.” That’s really as watertight as it can get.

So, does Jerry bite the bullet on Dak’s contract? This will induce over a $100 million in dead cap space. That will handicap them for years to come and make the whole operation futile, so realistically no. However, you can’t blame this franchise for wanting the hype and publicity that would come with having a ‘Sanders’ lining up with that iconic star on their jerseys at Jerry World. Well, with Jerry Jones and the Sanders family involved, nothing is out of the realm of possibilities.
