Deion Sanders’ two-way role as a coach and as a dad to his two talented sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, has always been in the top-tier discussion of the college football world. The quintessential coach, Prime Time’s never been an easy dad to his kids on the field. Starting from calling them out at every minor mistake to judging the performance minutely, Sanders has successfully dismissed the proverbial nepotism claim. Oh, come on, that doesn’t mean he is also up there to take the most non-partial and neutral dad’s award out there.
As Shilo Sanders steps into another year on this earth, Papa Sanders reveals a shocker that can lead to a heated family debate over dinner. Deion Sanders has been stuck to his sons since their tenure at Jackson State. His wide-awake dad instinct closely followed them throughout the days at Boulder and taught them a lot of the nitty-gritty of the sport. But guess what? Despite being under the same legendary guidance, Shilo and Shedeur developed into two very different QBs in their ranks. Shedeur, on the one hand, has been taking the world by storm with his performance in the Buffs jersey and is now considered among the top 5 pick in the draft. In a contradicting reality, Shilo couldn’t shake much of his field time with a faulty season marred by multiple penalties and injuries.
But it seems the coach phenom has a deep appreciation for his youngest child for how well he has picked himself up from the debris and kept on showing up and doing things when nobody is clapping. On his 25th birthday, the Colorado coach penned a pretty thoughtful note that reads, ‘‘Happy Blessed Birthday to MY FAVORITE SON @shilosanders! I’m so proud of you and your resilience. You’ve overcome injuries, lies, judgment & unwarranted criticism due to lack of knowledge. You’ve continued to stay focused on the main thing and stayed true to who u are. Love u son although u keep me praying and in God’s presence. #Nigh #Cranders #This… #BOB #Dad.”

You might laugh it off seeing his bias, but if you look at it through a father’s lens, you will understand his philosophy that stands out as always. It’s never about leaving Shedeur behind; rather, it’s about lifting the other one since he’s not celebrated enough for his behind-the-curtain efforts. It’s just a dad trying to restore a balance, a sense of equal appreciation and love for both of his sons, despite noting a pragmatic difference for the time being. The fun fact? He crowned his other son (Shedeur Sanders) as the favorite as well.

Recently, NFL rookie watch put a friendly family legacy competition between Deion Sanders’ Shedeur, Shilo, and Deion Sanders Jr.—against LaVar Ball and his three sons: Lonzo, LaMelo, and LiAngelo—and they gave it to the Ball family. Fans believe the main reason behind Sanders’ snub is Shilo Sanders’ average odds in the NFL draft and the past season for the Buffs. Although Deion Sanders didn’t take it that seriously, reestablishing his solidarity with Lavar, who has faced a similar difficult path as a black father in the mix, he has made sure he loves his kids too, and that’s beyond any pity comparison.
Days after, two of Deion’s gems, Shedeur and Shilo, celebrated their birthdays, and their coach dad couldn’t find any better occasion than this to set a benchmark of equal disbursement of love between the kids. What he did for Shilo was not exclusive.
Shedeur Sanders has never been out of the spotlight in the year and the past. After a staggering season at Boulder, the prodigy is currently ruling the draft market. It’s quite obvious that his dad will take immense pride in him for whatever he has achieved so far. After a crazy Super Bowl season, Sanders poured love on Shedeur on his birthday, noting, ‘‘happy birthday, my favorite son!’

It’s insane how a quote-unquote professional coach, who is also an emotionally intelligent dad, is making sure none of his sons are feeling left out in their father’s good book.
