Coach Prime is never out of the headlines. Even when the Buffs are enjoying a well-deserved bye-week, Deion Sanders has managed to garner attention from his critics. This time, it concerns his quarterback son: Shedeur Sanders. Shedeur has been viewed as a top prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft and his performances this season have only increased his stock. But which NFL team will go for him? Well, his father has a fair idea.
Back in March, Sanders said that he knew where he wanted his son and Travis Hunter to end up and it wouldn’t be “certain cities.” While at the time, Sanders denied making a list of teams his son would play for, he has once again stirred the pot by suggesting the Miami Dolphins should pick Sheduer Sanders.
The Buffs QB has had an impressive start to the 2024 season, and it is rightly reflected in the team’s 4-1 start. College football analysts have praised Shedeur for how effectively he has utilized his weapons and made plays when his O-line hasn’t always protected him. This does put him in the spotlight, but critics have now come out to discuss the practicality of such a move and question if Deion is overestimating his influence.

American sports columnist Jason Whitlock, a critic of Sanders in the past, said the idea of Shedeur moving to the Dolphins is a “good take.” He added, “I actually think that Shedeur with those speedy receivers Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill that’s what he’s kind of got at Colorado. I kind of love this take by Deion.” However, what Whitlock objected to, was the idea of Deion Sander taking up a coaching role at the Dolphins.
He laughed off the thought of Sanders taking up the hot seat at the Hard Rock Stadium before turning to Steve Kim for his opinion. Kim said while there is merit in Sheduer moving to Miami due to the injury to Tua Tagovailoa, he is not sure about Deion’s move as a coach.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Whitlock then said, “That’s what you think. What Deion thinks is that it would work at his best fit is actually in the NFL down in Miami, the area where he’s from. I’m sure, Warren Sapp salivating at the thought of coaching in Miami as well, and some of those other guys, and Deion and Shedeur being a package for the Dolphins. That is Deion’s dream and fantasy, and that’s what he’s thinking.”
Whitlock further compared the situation to past instances where top quarterbacks, like Eli Manning and John Elway, influenced their draft positions to avoid teams they didn’t want to join. “That’s what he’s trying to put in place. And so it wouldn’t matter if the Dolphins had the top pick in the draft, because Deion would probably, you know, do what John Elway did with his dad, and, you know, I’m not playing in Baltimore, what Eli Manning did, where did Eli didn’t want to play in San Diego.”
Now Shedeur’s move to Miami could be a possibility come 2025. If the young QB keeps up his performances in college football and helps the Buffs reach the business end of the season, his stock will only go up and add weight to his father’s claims. But does Miami need a new QB?

Is Deion Sanders' dream of Shedeur in Miami a stroke of genius or a misguided fantasy?
Have an interesting take?
Tua Tagovailoa’s most recent concussion does raise doubts about his long-term future in the NFL, but his massive $212.4 million extension signed in July suggests that the franchise may not be ready to move away from him at least till 2026. Still, there is a possibility given Tagovailoa’s injury status, that Miami may consider a move for Shedeur to provide them with that security for the next season. Tagovailoa’s concussion in the Week 2 defeat to the Buffalo Bills was his third in the past three seasons.
Picking a talented young QB as a handy option, who has completed 70.1 percent of his throws so far this season, seems like a reasonable move to make. However, Deion Sanders’s chances of landing a role at the Dolphins may not be that straightforward, according to Whitlock.
He added, “So I could see Deion trying to position himself for that play. It’s very interesting. I like Shedeur in Miami. I don’t think Deion is the right fit as an NFL head coach, but Deion certainly believes he’s the right fit. Very fascinating.”
Earlier appearing on the Night Cap Podcast on September 30, Coach Prime opened up about his son’s NFL prospects. Shannon Sharpe asked him, “Everybody is like, will Coach Prime pull an Eli?” Sanders shared his take and pointed out the ongoing situation in Miami. He said, “What do you do business-wise if you’re the Dolphins? Do you take a quarterback, which is what I’m saying, or do you say, ‘Tua, let’s check this out, let’s see what we’re going to do.’ Is his health more important than that?”
Chad Johnson then mentioned whether Shedeur should head to Miami to which Coach Prime replied, “So you just got the revelation, huh? I tried to feed you the revelation.”
The Dolphins are 1-3, and they’ve not looked good since Tua was placed on IR by the team. They have lost all three games and he looks unlikely to feature in Miami colors before Week 7. Coach Mike McDaniel’s position could be under the scanner if the poor run of form continues for the Phins. So is Coach Prime eyeing a double move for himself and his son?
According to the draft tracker websites, the Dolphins are projected to have the second pick in the 2025 NFL Draft if their fortunes do not improve. And who knows, if the Dolphins’ slump under McDaniels isn’t arrested, the bosses may start looking elsewhere.
The rumors around Shedeur to the Dolphins will now get rolling, but his off-field activities make it seem like he could be headed to a different NFL team.

Some view the possibility of Sanders joining the Raiders as a positive development; while many believe that if Sanders joins them, it may affect his football career, looking at the Raiders’ recent struggles. Also, the Buffs star must consider who the Raiders have in their division: Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City Chiefs. Does he really want to challenge himself in a division that Andy Reid has ruled since he got to Kansas?
For now, all eyes will be on Shedeur Sanders’ performance in the upcoming game against Kansas State and if his father shares any insights over his potential NFL move.
