So, is Deion Sanders a good coach? Or is the ‘Prime Time’ brand name saving his reputation and team? Let’s talk facts. Roll back to 2023. Probably the most hyped year for Colorado Buffs football. How did it end? 4-8. Bottom of the list on Pac-12 (back when it was relevant). The overall offensive and defensive depth of the team was tragic. And what about Deion Sanders’ star player, Travis Hunter? Yeah, it was bad. Hunter went for 721 yards on receiving with only 5 touchdowns. He was out for 3 games as well because of that liver injury. Now, when you take all of this and compare it with Deion Sanders’ 2024 season, where the Buffs went 9-3 and got their spot on the AP polls and the Top 25 CFP rankings, it makes you wonder.

See, Hunter picked up the Heisman trophy a few nights back. Somewhere, we all knew that Coach Prime’s 2-way star would get it. Yeah, on the voting, it did get close with RB Ashton Jeanty, but when you compare all the votes with what the QBs got, it was a clear landslide win. How was this possible? If Deion Sanders is all ‘Hollywood’ then how can his boy win a Heisman? Adam Breneman has an explanation. “I kept thinking about how Deion has been unconventional in how he’s coaching… Deion has embraced Travis Hunter and how he can play both ways. Deion really has showed through this how some bold coaching decisions can redefine what success looks like in college football,” Adam pointed out.

The thing is, Adam pointed out a very important aspect of Deion’s unconventional coaching style. Yes, Hunter was a massive player even in High School. He was already playing 2 ways back then, but how many college team HCs do you think would’ve allowed Hunter to continue that? There is almost a guarantee that Hunter would’ve been forced to follow a single role: WR or CB. But then comes Coach Prime, and everything changes.

Compare the 2023 Hunter with the 2024 version, and you’ll understand. Yes, he had a lot of impact on the turf back in 2023, but this season? This guy made 3 touchdowns and 1 interception twice in 2 different games. In the last 25 years of FBS history, no player has done that. What Adam points out, up to a certain extent, is true.

However, Hunter was always an excellent player. Deion Sanders didn’t ‘create’ Travis Hunter. He guided him towards success. This season? Coach Prime did everything right, and it wasn’t just with Hunter. He changed the offensive line, and he brought over 100 years of NFL experience to the coaching staff. This didn’t just help the Buffs but made them the top 21st team in scoring offense in the CFB.

And in defense? Well, Robert Livingstone handled that perfectly. This team went from allowing more than 35 points every single to barely allowing any team to cross past the 28-30 point mark. And you what? It ain’t just Hunter or the O-line/D-line Deion Sanders has managed to change. It’s the entire University of Colorado Boulder.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Deion Sanders' coaching genius or just luck with Travis Hunter's Heisman win and Buffs' success?

$100 million jackpot for Colorado

1984. QB Doug Flutie managed to land a 48-yard Hail Mary and somehow Boston managed to win the game against Miami. The ripple effect this event had was Boston becoming immensely popular between new students and other transfer student. Since then, whenever a university has achieved great monetary success because of the success of its sports division, it has been called the ‘Flutie‘ effect.

That is exactly what’s going on in Boulder. Over 60,000 new students applied to the University of Colorado after the Buffs managed to turn heads with their impressive 2024 season run. Not only that. The University had to extend offers to more than 50,000 transfer students as well.

Overall enrollment has increased to 3.4%, which is massive. If calculated correctly, this would lead to more than $100 million in earnings for the University. This is what you call good results. See, last year, Deion Sanders put Colorado on the map. Yes, their season was 4-8 and a disaster, but every mouth out there had the “Buffs” name on it.

Hate them or love them: Colorado now has a Heisman winner, and the Buffs are going to the Alamo Bowl. If that ain’t enough. Deion also has the 2025 class’s best QB, Julian Lewis, on his roster. Things are getting better at Boulder, and you might wanna buckle up for an amazing 2025 season ride!
