For Dabo Swinney, coming back to Pelham wasn’t just a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it was a heartwarming full-circle moment that highlighted how far he’s come while honoring where it all began. Swinney, who has become synonymous with Clemson football and is a two-time national champion head coach, returned to his alma mater for a night that will go down in Pelham’s history.
The occasion? The inaugural induction ceremony for the Pelham Athletics Hall of Fame. Swinney, along with 19 other legends spanning seven sports, was celebrated for their contributions to the school’s proud athletic legacy. As the Shelby County Reporter noted, Swinney’s inclusion in this elite class was a no-brainer. With his two national titles and a coaching résumé that makes him the most successful head coach in ACC history, Swinney stood tall among the other honorees.
The Hall of Fame induction was packed with local legends, including Tyler Watts, a former Parade All-American quarterback who led Alabama to an SEC Championship in 1999. But it was Swinney, a three-sport star during his Pelham days who graduated in 1988, who stole the show. From excelling in high school athletics to playing for Alabama’s 1992 national title team and later coaching Clemson to two championships (including one over Alabama), Swinney’s journey is a testament to grit, faith, and resilience.

When reflecting on his path, Swinney didn’t shy away from sharing the profound influence Pelham had on him. “Pelham gave me toughness, a belief in myself, and just a competitive fire,” he said. Swinney credited his coaches—Billy Tohill, Jim Vakakes, and Paul Kellogg—as pivotal mentors who instilled in him the values that would carry him through life and into his coaching career.

Swinney’s speech during the ceremony was equal parts inspiring and personal. He opened up about how his faith and family have been constants in his life, shaping his journey through every high and low. “I just think God’s had His hand on my life for a long time,” he said, reflecting on how his wife, Kathleen, has been his rock since their days at Pelham High School.
“You don’t do anything great in life by yourself,” Swinney added. “(Kathleen) has been a rock in my life for a long time. We dated through high school and all through college, and now we’re going on 31 years.” It was a touching acknowledgment of the roots they laid in Pelham and the journey they’ve shared since then.
Pelham is always home for Dabo Swinney
For Swinney, Pelham isn’t just where his story started—it’s the thread that ties everything together. “I’ve experienced a lot of life, but everything for me comes back to Pelham,” he said, noting the deep pride he feels in his hometown. “I’m very intentional when people ask me where I’m from. I always tell them, ‘I’m from Pelham, Alabama,’ and I’m proud of that. Every time I come back here, it doesn’t matter how far removed I am, it feels like yesterday,” Swinney shared, his voice brimming with emotion.
One of the most memorable moments of the evening came when Swinney revealed the significance of a house in Pelham—his childhood home. During his middle school years, Swinney’s family lost the home due to financial hardships following his parents’ divorce. But in 2020, Swinney reclaimed it.

“I bought my childhood home in 2020. It was taken away from us, and it was one of those traumatic moments in my life,” he said. “I bought it and framed the deed and put my dad’s picture in there. I try to rent it to somebody that’s affiliated with the (Pelham) Police Department. It’s special,” Swinney added.
