One star? Seriously? There was a time when Colorado’s bold athletic director never held back and claimed Travis Hunter was soaking up the spotlight. But what about Shedeur Sanders? The AD claimed Shedeur’s buzz isn’t nearly as loud. But now, the tide is turning. The director’s focus is clear. Hunter isn’t just shining—he’s redefining greatness. At CU, the bar isn’t just high. It’s sky-high!
Even though football season’s over, Travis Hunter from CU is still racking up the trophies! As of January 29th, Hunter is CU’s first player to be selected both a First-Team Academic All-American and an Unanimous First-Team All-American. As the Heisman winner accomplishes yet another unprecedented milestone, Rick George, the CU Buffs AD, recently sung Travis Hunter’s “Praises” in an Instagram post. “Congratulations @TravisHunterJr, You have set a high standard for future Buffs!,” wrote the AD on X.

See, Hunter isn’t just making history—he’s rewriting it. He’s only the third Heisman winner to earn Academic All-American of the Year, trailing just Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow. This award isn’t about touchdowns. It’s about brains and books. The best student-athlete in college football. And Hunter? He owns that title. But that’s not all. He’s also the only Buffalo ever named a unanimous All-American. Talent. Dedication. Legacy. He’s setting records and raising standards.
You know, it’s challenging enough to have one of the most memorable seasons in CFB, while excelling academically. But Hunter has demonstrated that he can do all of that. Well done, Travis! He played more than 90% of the team’s snaps, including 672 offensive and 688 defensive snaps. In the FBS, he was the first player to record more than 150 snaps on both ends of the field. His offensive totals were 1,152 receiving yards, 14 TDs, and 92 receptions. And his four picks during the regular season earned him the title of Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
It’s a unique accomplishment for him to be able to dominate both offense and defense at this level. And he hopes to continue doing so in the NFL. Not sure how much of his hopes will come true, but the character he has given to the Buffs is very admirable. And the head coach was full of praise.
Deion Sanders’ shout-out to Travis Hunter
Hunter’s demeanor is what really sticks out, especially to his HC Deion Sanders, despite his outstanding talent. And throughout the season, the former NFL player highlighted Hunter’s maturity and leadership. And the Buffs’ coach praised him not only for his skill but also for the character he contributes to the group.

“He’s a good human being, he’s not smoking, not drinking, not outside [explicit], not doing crazy things. He’s got one of the highest GPAs on the team, he’s a great human being, and he can play, his character is second to none,” said Deion Sanders.
But now, Travis Hunter isn’t just chasing greatness—he’s chasing a legacy. It appears he wants to be the modern Deion Sanders. To be honest, Hunter isn’t content to focus on just one sport, even though he is already drawing attention to the football field. And he doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

The athlete’s flexibility astounded fans when he recently revealed his skills outside of football. “If y’all don’t know, I can play a lot of sports, but you will never know because I play football. I could play basketball, too. I can run track. I can do long jump, high jump in track. I can do the mile, the 400. I can play baseball if I felt like it,” said Hunter.
And if anyone has previously established the standard for success in a variety of sports, it’s Deion Sanders. He was well-known for his supremacy in baseball and football. Now, Hunter is determined to proceed in his footsteps.
Hunter said, “I might make the transition soon and be like a Coach Prime, Deion Sanders. Go ahead and get my Ms over there, too, while I get my Ms in the NFL. I could go out there and be a good outfielder for you. I could steal bases for you.” As of now, it’s understandable why Hunter has faith in his skills.
