Is the Buffs' logo decision a branding move or a political statement? What's your take?

Controversies spread faster than a Hail Mary downfield here, and if the Colorado Buffaloes are involved, they have a field day. Right before their big game against Texas Tech, Deion Sanders and crew achieved one of their aims of securing bowl eligibility after eight long tears. The happy times after the bye week came to an end with this one as they hit the road to TX in week 11. But you’ll know the Buffs’ are no strangers to drama. Now, the latest drama is courtesy of Sean Davis, who’s got everyone buzzing on X. What’s got him so fired up?

A Texas company claimed that the Buffs’ team allegedly declined to approve any logo designs featuring the American flag, igniting political speculation and setting social media on fire. Davis is speculating about the patriotism in Boulder—or lack thereof. “Texas Tech is awesome. Red Raiders love America. The University of Colorado, on the other hand, hates America.” But the spotlight quickly fell on Rick George, Colorado Buffaloes Athletic Director, and he was not about to let the rumor mill churn unchecked.

Leave it to Mr. AD to knock off the “anti-American” sentiment’s propaganda. George wasted no time setting the record straight. With a cheeky clap back with direct aim, he stated, “You are wrong, Sean Davis.” But why did such a rumor gain traction in the first place? The timing couldn’t be more perfect. Fresh off a high-stakes election season, tensions are already high across the nation. In the video posted by “Libs of TikTok,” the owner of the company responsible for the fuss said this: “At this point with our fanbase, we decided we would not be selling any type of Colorado merchandise in the store with the logo.”

The Buffs AD’s rebuttal wasn’t just aimed at Davis—it was a call to people in Boulder and anyone who might take the controversy at face value. CU Buffs’ marketing team likely made decisions based on branding objectives rather than any form of political statement. Coach Prime and Co. will look to answer these accusations on the football pitch.
