Is Sherrone Moore's potential suspension a justified move, or is the NCAA overstepping its bounds?

Sherrone Moore has traveled with the Wolverines for the past seven years. In that span, he’s shown a pattern of aversion toward the NCAA’s rulebook. From signing recruits during restricted periods to participating in sign-stealing from opponents, he’s done everything possible.

Now that Moore is the head coach, things look pretty bad for him and the Wolverines, too, with the season opener approaching in days.

This Sunday, the NCAA issued a stern Notice of Allegations (NOA) for Sherrone Moore and his staff. They now have 90 days to respond while juggling their Big Ten games. This could be a bigger threat to Moore than it initially appears. While fans will chant “Go Blue” in the stadiums, Moore will feel the heat from these ongoing investigations. For starters, UM has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Our athletic department and university continue to cooperate with the NCAA regarding our ongoing investigation.” And they’ve stayed true to that so far.

Last year, Moore was hit with a one-game suspension for violations during the COVID-19 recruiting dead period. But that was just the tip of the iceberg for Michigan. The situation escalated when former staffer Connor Stalions was caught buying tickets and sending people to record the hand signals of opposing coaches. And the silent culprit in all this is former HC Jim Harbaugh. He tried to downplay his involvement, but the NCAA wasn’t convinced. Both Harbaugh and the Michigan program have faced Level I charges. And Stalions, too, joins them.

As the investigation continues, even Moore’s future in college football hangs in the balance.

Will Sherrone Moore be suspended?

Connor Stalions is at the center of the current controversy, but his attorneys argue that “Connor is a scapegoat in the NCAA’s ongoing quest to show that it has a purpose in today’s sports world.” Meanwhile, Sherrone Moore, who allegedly worked hand in hand with this so-called “scapegoat,” is also under scrutiny. Moore faces a Level 2 charge for deleting over 50 text messages with Stalions, which were later recovered and handed to the NCAA.

Have an interesting take?

As the head coach of the Wolverines, Moore is now the face of the program, and his future is uncertain. Earlier this August, ESPN’s Pete Thamel discussed Moore’s situation on the Pat McAfee Show, saying, “In the notice draft, he’s a repeat violator… He faces, the draft says, potential suspension and perhaps a show-cause order.” And with his 5-year contract worth $6 million per year, the possibility of suspension is raising eyebrows, though a more severe penalty seems likely.

The NCAA might ban Moore from a few games, similar to the punishment Jim Harbaugh received last year. And we all remember what happened next! Despite Harbaugh’s suspension, the Wolverines achieved a perfect 15-0 season and won the championship.  Can the Wolverines pull off a similar winning season amidst the rumors of their HC’s impending suspension?
