Is Ohio State's ranking over Georgia justified, or is it just blatant favoritism by the CFP?

It’s that time of the year again! With the first edition of college football playoff rankings, fans, analysts, and teams are going insane! Oregon is sitting on top of every other team. Georgia’s 3rd rank was also being predicted, and there wasn’t any chaos about it. However, the real drama starts now. Well, Ohio State is sitting at no. 2, and that was fine, but now everyone is in disbelief. Why are they ranked above the Georgia Bulldogs? The flames of this debate have reached CFP officials as well, and they are now clarifying their decision.

On Wednesday, November 5, ESPN College Football revealed the CFP committee chair Warde Manuel and Booger McFarland‘s statements from their recent media appearance. ESPN wrote the caption for the same: “The CFP selection committee chair explained the decision behind No. 2 Ohio State being ahead of No. 3 Georgia in the initial CFP rankings.”

After which they shared the main reason given by Warde Manuel. “They both had great wins.. In terms of the losses they had, Ohio State lost to No. 1 Oregon by one point, and Georgia lost to No. 11 Alabama… that was really the difference.” While it was the official comments of Manuel, Booger McFarland said, “It’s clear the committee is valuing maybe the better loss and not the better win.”

As per the manual, Ohio State was ranked above Georgia because the way they lost one game was better than the way Georgia lost one. Well, the reason is quite acceptable because Ohio lost to No. 1 ranked Oregon while Georgia lost to No. 11 ranked Alabama. Well, despite the official statement given by Manuel, fans are not happy with the decision and they are sensing a kind of favoritism about it. On top of that, let’s look at the other teams ranked by the college football playoff committee.

Playoff rankings of the top 12 teams

Apart from the no. 1 ranked Oregon Ducks, no. 2 Ohio State, and no. 3 Georgia Bulldogs and Miami Hurricanes are in the fourth spot. Added to that, the 5th rank is given to the Texas Longhorns. followed by no. 6 Penn State Nittany, no. 7 Tennessee Volunteers, no. 8 Indiana Hoosiers, no. 9 BYU Cougars, and no. 10th ranked Notre Dame.

After which, there is the Alabama Crimson Tide, ranked at no. 11, and the Boise State Broncos are ranked at no. 12. “I’ll say that next month and this last month leading into the playoff is going to be extremely exciting because teams that before we weren’t thinking about going into the playoff are going to have an opportunity,” said Playoff Committee Chair Warde Manuel.

However, the upcoming week 10 games will further solidify these ranks. Apart from that, what are your thoughts on it? Do you think officials favor Ohio State over Georgia?
