With a spectacular 52-0 shutdown to Oklahoma State, Colorado capped off the regular season 9-3. Everyone’s happy but somebody feels that their second-year HC deserves more than just verbal appreciation. In the thick of this celebration, as they get ready for the postseason rounds, Deion Sanders receives a historic gift from his loyal staffer.

Ain’t Coach Neely a thoughtful and generous human being! As per an X update on December 2, Uncle Neely presented Deion Sanders with a priceless Thanksgiving gift—a black Negro League Baseball jacket straight from Negro League Baseball Museum. As he opened his gift, he said, “This screamed your name. I had to get it for you.” Deion Sanders was lost for words as he carefully looked at the logos of the different teams on the jacket and exclaimed, “This is unbelievable. This is so much history… I’m gonna rock this with pride.

Here’s a brief history of the Negro League Baseball. It’s a league created in 1920 by black players because they weren’t allowed to play in the Major Leagues. It turned into a highly successful league due to its talented players and dedicated fanbase. But by the 1950s, MLB began to sign these explosive black players which ultimately led to the disbandment of the league, which became a huge blow to black-owned sports enterprises.

Therefore, to keep the legacy of the Negro League Baseball alive, this jacket idea came up to honor and show respect to the league that was once a big part of the blacks. Deion Sanders had also been part of the MLB franchise for nine seasons from 1989 to 2001. So you see the sentiment there and how much of a value this gift holds to the Buffs HC who is one of the most influential black figures. This gift will remain a cherished treasure for Deion Sanders who led this season to a “phenomenal finish.”

Oklahoma State victory fails to get Colorado a Big 12 Championship berth

We’ve exceeded all expectations, and I’m really happy where we are,” Deion Sanders said after their final win. “We certainly wanted to take that one extra step last week, and we fell short. But look how we rebounded… And I’m proud of our young men.” Colorado was dominant all-round outgaining the OKSU 471-147 and recording 26 first downs compared to the Cowboys’ 10. Even so, this terrific win failed to get them a conference title appearance.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Deion Sanders' gift symbolize a deeper connection to the Negro League's enduring legacy in sports?

Have an interesting take?

Colorado needed one of its three tied teams—BYU, Arizona State, and Iowa State—to lose to get a chance in the Big 12 Championship game. But they all won and the tiebreakers didn’t fall in the Buffs’ favor. Arizona State and Iowa State will face each other in the conference title showdown in Arlington, Texas. Still, Colorado’s 7-2 record is the best conference record for the program since 1991. Deion Sanders and the Buffs still have the bowl game to look forward to whose schedule will be released next Sunday.
