Are the BYU Cougars truly overrated, or was the loss to Kansas just a fluke?

And this is the outcome you end up with when you fail to meet people’s expectations. Nobody could have predicted that the 9-win BYU Cougars would lose their game against the 4-6 Kansas Jayhawks. This not only resulted in a lot of criticism for the team but also led to them being labeled as “overrated.” This perception has raised doubts about their ability to compete against their upcoming Big 12 rival, the Buffs, in the next game.

On the November 18th episode of the Ruffino & Joe Show, the host talked about the BYU Cougars’ gameplay against the Jayhawks in their last game, criticizing them for leading the Big 12 despite poor performances. “BYU was scraping their way through most of their games, and they had two good performances. What I’m trying to say here is that nothing that they did was exceptional. They were extremely average,” he said. Well, the Jayhawks only scored two touchdowns against BYU and won the game; this is surely not exceptional. It looks like the team is not as talented as they are being hyped.

The BYU Cougars are considered one of the teams that actually have the potential to play in the Big 12 championship and might also be a title holder, but after their loss against the Kansas Jayhawks, there are possibilities that they even lose to the Deion Sanders Colorado Buffs, as they are the ones who the Cougars are most likely to play in a Big 12 championship game. Not to mention, the Buffs have two more games against the Kansas Jayhawks and Oklahoma State, and with likely wins projected, it seems like an easy task for Coach Prime and the team.

Even hosts Joe Deleone mentioned the same thing in the show, saying, “It took one matchup against a team that had a little bit of creativity on offense for them to finally lose and to show where their deficiencies are. I don’t think that they’re built to beat Colorado.” Each loss right now will make everyone question their standing in the game. For now, let’s see what BYU’s head coach has to say about their loss and coping strategy.

Have an interesting take?

Well, losing against an unranked team is surely not something the BYU Cougars would have had in their minds before entering Saturday’s game against the Jayhawks. The loss not only highlighted their flaws in execution but also landed them on a major turf with their position in the Big 12 rankings. Even Cougars’ head coach Kalani Sitake seems quite disappointed with the team’s overall performance last weekend, as in his post-game interview Sitake said, “There is a lot of room for improvement in all three phases, and we will get to work on that.” The team really needs to work on their offense, as after their game against the Kansas Jayhawks, it’s evident that they might struggle in that area.

The Jayhawks successfully stopped BYU Cougars star quarterback Jake Retzlaff to just 192 yards of run and a touchdown with two sacks in their showdown. This can’t happen in BYU’s next game against Arizona State if the team really wants to be among the playoff-entering teams. However, coach Kalani Sitake is also poised that the team will make notable improvements, saying, “We have a good team. We’re still in a good spot. I believe we control our own destiny still.” Now it will be interesting to see how the BYU Cougars make their comeback after landing an embarrassing loss against the Kansas Jayhawks last week. Or will the Jayhawks pull off another upset and shock the world by beating the Buffs?
