Are college football teams too quick to fire coaches, or is it a necessary shake-up?

It’s that time of the year! We’re already eight weeks into the college football season, and three coaches have already gotten the boot for poor performance. Perhaps the decisions are in the best intentions, but these college football teams will have to pay the price for their drastic actions.

On number one, we have Southern Miss HC Will Hall who is getting fired after recording 14-30 in his fourth season. The last 44-28 loss to Arkansas State was the final straw as the Golden Eagles dropped 1-6 into the season. But as per Hall’s contract, Southern Miss now owes $860,000 to their former HC.

Up next, we have East Carolina HC Mike Houston. ECU just suffered another straight blowout loss under their HC of six years. So they’ve decided to cut short his contract which was supposed to run through December 2026. The price for that? As per 247Sports’ report, the Pirates owe Houston “just under roughly $3 million total.”

The next in line is Oklahoma OC Seth Littrell who was hired as a replacement for Jeff Lebby last December. HC Brent Venables and the Sooners have decided to fire him after their 35-9 blowout loss to South Carolina which marked their worst home loss since 2014. Littrell was supposed to stay with the program till 2026 with an annual salary of $1.1 million. So, the Sooners owe him over $2.2 million. All of these numbers stack up to a combined roughly $6 million, proving that such a move can be very expensive. But hey, these three unfortunate coaches might not be the last we see getting fired.

More college football HCs to follow suit?

After Week 8, fans’ complaints have become loud enough to rally protests for the college football HCs. Stuck in the fiasco are USC HC Lincoln Riley and Florida State HC Mike Norvell whose dismissals are what fans are hoping for and waiting on. The Trojans have fallen from grace with their 3-4 record after their last 29-28 loss against Maryland. They already lost four of their five Big Ten games and fans think it’s high time the Trojans embrace new coaching.

Have an interesting take?

Mike Norvell and FSU seem to have never recovered from the 2023 playoff snub. Their 1-6 record this season speaks for itself as Norvell continues to find himself in the face of fans’ fury. But one interesting thing about these two underperforming HCs is that both of them are among the ones earning an 8-figure salary! It’s very likely that more coaching conundrum will surface as we head deeper into the season.
