Are the Michigan Wolverines losing their edge, or is BYU just that good this season?

The defending champions, the Michigan Wolverines, are facing a challenging season with a 4-2 record. Head coach Sherrone Moore and his team need to step up as the competition heats up. After a disappointing loss in Week 2, they managed to bounce back with three consecutive wins, but fans remained skeptical about the quality of those victories. Unfortunately, their winning streak came to an end last weekend when Washington defeated them.

While analysts, media outlets, and football insiders have their eyes on big teams like Michigan, the BYU Cougars have emerged as the real underdogs in college football this season. So far, they have played five games. Any guess for how many games they won? You won’t believe they have won all five games. Ahead of Week 7, former NFL player and football commentator Greg McElroy has shared his Top 15 college football teams, highlighting the Texas Longhorns at the top of the list. The BYU Cougars have also made an impression, earning the eighth spot in McElroy’s rankings. Now you might be wondering where Michigan stands; unfortunately, the Wolverines are not in his top 15 list.

ESPN College Football’s YouTube channel shared McElroy’s video where the former player highlighted the BYU Cougars’s solid victories against big opponents like SMU and Kansas State: “At number nine, I have BYU a little different than most people. I look at the resume, and with the win against both SMU and Kansas State, those two teams currently are very, very, very solid. Kansas State sits in the top 20.” After BYU continues to build momentum, McElory’s faith and trust in the Cougars highlight the growing belief in their potential to make waves in CFB this year.

Greg McElroy acknowledged SMU’s strong performance but emphasized that BYU’s game plan deserves more attention. He pointed out that no one seems to be focusing on BYU and believes BYU this season is underrated. “SMU is now cracked at the top 25 they have beaten two ranked opponents, and they did so in pretty remarkable fashion, the win against Kansas State, yes, they were out game, but they dominated at times the line of scrimmage. Forced a lot of mistakes, and they made SMU look really human. There a couple weeks ago, BYU, sitting there undefeated. I think they are really underrated right now.”

BYU secured its fifth straight victory of the 2024 season

Head coach Kalani Sitake and his BYU Cougars are on the right path this season after securing their fifth win of 2024 with a 34-28 victory over Baylor. The game was competitive, with Baylor having opportunities to take the lead. A key moment came when defensive lineman Elinus Noel III made his first career interception at the Cougars’ 25-yard line, and the Cougars benefited from their mistake.

Robertson displayed some impressive performance; he completed 27 out of 48 passes for 324 yards and scored three crucial touchdowns. But he was also sacked three times. BYU’s quarterback Jake Retzlaff also outperformed and contributed significantly to his team’s fifth win. He threw 216 yards and recorded two touchdowns.
