Texas can't clinch the top spot—are they overrated or just unlucky this season?

“This is who we are. This is how we know how to play.” It is safe to say that out of all the teams this year, Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns have had the best start to the 2024 season. Grabbing a massive 52-0 victory over the Rams during the season opener and then going on to beat the Wolverines 31-12. Steve Sarkisian has managed to transform Longhorns football with his QB Quinn Ewers and this newly upgraded roster. Legend Nick Saban was quite right when he said he has all the faith in Sarkisian and his boys to nail it this year. Running at a 2-0 record as week 2 closes, the Longhorns are flying high.

So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the team got ranked in the No.2 spot on the KFord Ratings list. On September 11th, Kelley Ford took to X to share the new rankings of all the teams in CFB. “Most Deserving Rankings after Week 2,” Kelley Ford captioned their post. On the list, the Longhorns stood at a solid 1.751 score, closely followed by the Bulldogs at 1.724. It was quite visible that this team was going to dominate this year after Longhorns LB, David Gbenda effortlessly managed to push away Wolverines Dominick Guidice, followed by the blocks by Jake Majors. The Longhorns have been on their best behavior and we saw how Ewers managed to deliver from the pockets and create pressure. The entire offensive line and defense have been on point as well.

The game against the Rams only saw the Longhorns allowing 118 rushing yards and 74 passing yards. From the 1st to the 4th quarter, it was pure domination. Also, if you go back and check the film of the Wolverines game, while Michigan did put up a solid fight, Steve Sarkisian and his team were better in every aspect. The Wolverines were only allowed to rush 80 yards and Longhorns players; Davis Warren, Donovan Edwards, and Colston Loveland proved why Ewers ain’t the only star on the team. However, while one team enjoys all the glory, another is barely staying afloat.

Notre Dame is sinking

When the Fighting Irish lost to Northern Illinois after their emotional season opener against Texas A&M, no one had thought that the team would be pushed this low on the ranking list. Notre Dame is currently standing on No.49 with 0.216 after Northern Illinois kicker Kanon Woodill crushed HC Marcus Freeman’s dream of winning the second game of the season with a 35-yard field goal.

Have an interesting take?

“Now it’s time to get it fixed,” Freeman had said during the post-game conference after their 16-14 loss. The question is, how? Right now, all the spotlights are on QB Riley Leonard. Although the Irish lost their second game, Leonard established that he is someone you should keep an eye out for. The dude completed 20-32 passes and ran for around 163 yards. If Freeman can focus more on the offensive line of the team, then maybe he can slither out of the schedule and grab some more wins. However, nothing is written in stone. Only time will tell how Notre Dame climbs out of this loss.
