Home/College Football

Week 4 of college football had the moving dramas, the complete blowouts, and the shifts in positions and rankings. There is a lack of formality in the competition, but as the season approaches, the midpoint expects a tremendous fight among the contenders. Joel Klatt, who analyzes college football games, had new changes in the top teams he considers the best after week four, and he made some drastic changes.

The latest Klatt rankings have re-accommodated two heavyweights, Texas and Ohio State, at the top, and former big guns Georgia and Alabama have dived down. Yet, what was responsible for such a massive change? Klatt explained his actions based on what is happening in the continually evolving college football landscape and why these changes are essentially the future.

Joel Klatt had no doubt why he ranked Texas and Ohio states one and two, respectively. “My number one team is Texas,” Klatt emphasized on The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast. “Doesn’t matter who’s playing quarterback. That team is elite; they’ve got a great coach, a great plan, an elite offensive line, and right now the Longhorns are my number one team.” Although Quinn Ewers didn’t play, the Longhorns showed the world about their squad’s depth by thrashing Louisiana Monroe 51-3.

Ohio State, on the other hand, keeps on soaring through the early schedule matches, winning comfortably. Klatt described during the show that he fully agrees with the views, stating, “That run game is gonna be a problem for anybody in the country.” Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson are tough nuts to crack for any defense, and the Ohio State team is packed with talented offensive players. Ohio State’s overwhelming victory against Marshall 49-14 put them as No. 2, according to Klatt.

Here’s Joel Klatt’s updated Top 10 rankings after Week 4:

Klatt also applauded Ohio State’s defense and noted, “I do believe that defense is going to play lights out; let’s see if they can get some pass rush.” While Ohio State has yet to play better competition, there is no question that their dominating opponents have made them a lock for the top spot.

Alabama and Georgia’s fall from grace

While Texas and Ohio State would get promoted to the top, Alabama and Georgia, as usual powerhouse teams, would be demoted in the rankings of Klatt. Georgia’s narrow victory over Kentucky by 13-12 did not help them stay in the top three. “I get a lot of flack for putting Georgia at five,” Klatt said. “But everybody else in that top four has shown a higher level to date than Georgia.”

The University of Alabama, on the other hand, has issues with defense despite beating Wisconsin 42-10. Klatt had some words to say, claiming that their defense is going to begin surrendering some giant plays soon. “I do think that their defense is going to start giving up some big plays here soon ‘cause the big plays are there to be had on film.” He also mentioned that Alabama returners suffered considerable losses at secondary; Moore is the sole returnee from the last season.

However, Klatt added, “Defense, I would say, would be my question mark for Alabama.” Altogether, one can only state that a lot can change over time as you progress deeper into the season. Klatt said: “Those three teams, all Elite, all of them are Elite. Miami is as well, though, by the way. Georgia is as well. I think that we’ve got five really elite teams.”

But the presence of Alabama and Georgia in the final will make it interesting; for now, they are lagging far behind the mentioned teams of Texas and Ohio State, but it will be very engaging to see who will wrestle for the National Championship title.
