Is Graham Harrell's departure the wake-up call Purdue needs to turn their season around?

Purdue Boilermakers are in the spotlight, but not for the right reasons. After suffering an embarrassing 28-10 loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the team is taking big steps to make a significant impact on the game. Purdue’s struggling offense was quite visible throughout, with the team only gaining 224 yards. As a result, Purdue’s offensive coordinator, Graham Harrell, had to pay a pretty big amount of their loss.

Today, Tom Dienhart from On3 Sports took to X to share shocking news regarding Purdue’s offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Graham Harrell’s position in the team. Tom said, “Purdue has moved on from offensive coordinator Graham Harrell.” It looks like Purdue’s head coach, Ryan Walters, is not letting their loss against the Huskers slide easily. Over the last three games, the Boilermakers’ offense has been lackluster, managing just 38 points in total against Notre Dame (7), Oregon State (21), and Nebraska (10), except for a 49-0 win against Indiana State to start the season.

The reason was sufficient for Ryan Walters to seek a new offensive coordinator. The team faced various setbacks after their poor performance against the Huskers. Now, Purdue statically ranks as having the worst offensive line in the country. Which instantly triggered Walters to take such a drastic step of letting Graham Harrell go.

Ryan also mentioned in a statement about his sudden decision, saying, “Decisions like this are never easy.” He also appreciated Graham’s efforts towards the team, saying, “After evaluating our start to the season, I felt that it was best for our team to make a change now. We are appreciative of Graham’s contributions to our program and wish him the best going forward.” Surprisingly, even fans are unbothered about his sudden exit.

Fans’ weird reaction to Graham Harrell’s exit

Purdue Boilermakers recorded 13 penalties running for 165 yards against Nebraska. The team has also suffered three consecutive losses in the season because of a weak offensive line. If Ryan Walters couldn’t stand this fact and had to remove Graham Harrell, what else do you expect from their fans? Anything that brings change is what fans are hoping for. “Well, at least it’s a change,” one said.

However, they even feel that this change could also not bring any luck for Purdue in their upcoming faceoff against the Wisconsin Badgers. “Scapegoat. Gonna suck just as bad next week.” Well, Ryan’s recent decision should make a visible change in their gameplay; otherwise, it was all for nothing. Even this fan feels the same as they said, “Not sure it helps the season, but it had to be done.”

Well, taking such big steps in the middle of the ongoing season has surely raised many eyes on Purdue’s next move. Surprisingly, a different opinion came across. “Losing to a Matt Rhule-coached team should be an automatic firing.” Not sure what was the reason behind such a harsh take at Matt Rhule, but even after sustaining multiple penalties in the game, they still managed to secure a victory against Purdue. For now, a win is crucial for Purdue to show they’re not the worst in the Big 10 and justify the drastic decision they just made.
