Sherrone Moore and his crew are in some serious trouble right now. They’re surrounded by a storm of bad news just days before their season opener against Fresno State on August 31. This past Sunday, the NCAA dropped a bombshell on them, and it’s not looking so good.

From 2021 to 2023, the Michigan staff was involved in an illegal sign-stealing scandal and other violations. This scandal has cast a vast shadow over their recent achievements, including their 2023 championship title. It looks like Michigan’s 2023 championship title winner status could be wiped from the record books soon.

On August 25, sports insider Michael Hartwell added his report on this. “In the wake of their official notice of allegations sent to Michigan, the NCAA plans on vacating all wins and championships from 2021 to 2023. Sherrone Moore will also be suspended for the entire 2024 season, pending appeals,” he posted on X.

Moore ended the weekend on a rough note. The NCAA officially delivered a Notice of Allegations (NOA) to him and his staff. They now have 90 days to respond to it in writing.

Well, it’s a bummer for the team, as they had hoped for some positive buzz before their season opener with the release of their Netflix documentary. Connor Stalions, the central figure behind the scandal, was set to share his side of the story in the “Sign Stealer” episode of Netflix’s “Untold” series, airing this Tuesday. However, with the NCAA’s recent actions, there’s talk that Netflix might make some last-minute changes before the release.

As Michigan braces for severe consequences, the players’ feat could also be in jeopardy.

Sherrone Moore faces a firestorm

Sherrone Moore and his team have violated several NCAA rules. During the COVID recruiting period, they signed several recruits when they shouldn’t have. Connor Stalions is also suspected of scouting players for opposing teams, even going so far as to digitally record their signals, which is a major violation. These actions have seriously scrutinized Michigan’s perfect 15-0 season last year.

For a while, it seemed like the Wolverines might dodge some serious bullets. Even earlier this month on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN expert Pete Thamel confidently said, “One thing I’m certain of is that any accomplishments they won’t be taken away.” He suggested the team might face a hefty fine but nothing more. However, recent reports are painting a different picture for Moore’s crew. Some experts now hint at much harsher penalties, like a possible postseason ban. According to Michael Hartwell, the NCAA might even vacate all of Michigan’s wins during that period. Yet, back in January, the NCAA’s president, Charlie Baker, praised the team after their championship win, saying, “No one believes at this point that Michigan didn’t win the national title fair and square.”

It’s clear the NCAA isn’t taking this lightly, and while it’s uncertain if Michigan’s accomplishments will be stripped away, the punishments could be severe.
