Did Evander Holyfield's awkward broadcast make you appreciate Lee Corso's charm even more?

Is this really happening right now? That’s what many college football fans were probably thinking as they tuned into Netflix’s first-ever boxing event featuring Jake “El Gallo” Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight today and saw none other than Evander Holyfield on the broadcast panel. The former heavyweight champ looked like he was either lost in dimension or completely out of it. It’s safe to say that Holyfield’s performance on the panel left many fans longing for the days when our Lee Corso was simply the quirky, adorable, and occasionally confused elder statesman of the ESPN College GameDay.

It didn’t take long for viewers to see what was going on. The fans were quick to notice this train wreck of a segment. Holyfield, who was supposed to provide insights alongside fellow boxing legend Lennox Lewis, appeared dazed and barely able to string a sentence together. His awkward body language and menacing half-smile made it clear he wasn’t quite “with it” during the broadcast. Sitting next to him, former undisputed heavyweight champ Lewis Lennox tried to carry the weight, just like Kirk Herbstreit carries 89-year-old Lee Corso every Saturday on the College GameDay. But unlike Corso, who still brings charm to the show, the 62-year-old Holyfield came in with a diabolical combo of black tee & sunglasses and was giving off an energy that made fans squirm.

For the college football crowd, the situation hit close to home. Fans have long complained about Lee Corso’s occasional struggles to stay sharp on the air. Still, compared to Holyfield’s bizarre performance, Lee Corso looked like a saint. At least Corso is still a lovable figure on GameDay, bringing passion to the show even if he’s not always on his A-game. But seeing Holyfield stumble through an interview with all the grace of a brick wall? Well, that really put things into perspective for fans.

The Internet community was not kind to Holyfield

The fans wasted no time expressing their thoughts, and the X roast session was in full swing. One fan didn’t mince words: “Man, get Evander Holyfield off there. This is worse than Lee Corso on GameDay.” The comparison was harsh but fair—both are legendary in their own game. But Holyfield’s awkward performance seemed out of place for this kind of broadcast.

Others were quick to point out how absurd the whole situation was looking. “Even Lee Corso thinks Evander shouldn’t be on set. Sheesh,” one fan wrote, capturing the general disbelief that someone could look so out of touch on a high-profile Netflix broadcast. Another fan took a shot at the absurdity of it all with a sarcastic twist: “Lmaooo bruh why do they got Evander up here like Lee Corso man?” The comparison was almost too easy, and the fans weren’t having it.

The most savage reaction came from a fan who tweeted, “Meanwhile, even when he finally hears the question, Evander can barely string a sentence together. This is worse abuse than COLLEGE GAMEDAY trotting Lee Corso out every weekend. Had to mute it. An Exxon-Valdez level disaster. H. E. L. P.” Okay, this one outta line hurts. The comparison between the two broadcasts was brutal, but it seemed to strike a chord with viewers who are struggling to make sense of Holyfield’s performance.

Finally, one fan pointed out the obvious: “Pulling double duty managing Evander Holyfield like Kirk Herbstreit does with Lee Corso.” It was a perfect analogy: Just like Herbstreit works overtime to keep Corso on track, Lewis had to babysit Holyfield through the entire segment. It’s clear that the “reality check” that fans were hoping in this segment didn’t exactly pan out.

In the end, the whole fiasco served as a reminder that sometimes it’s time for certain legends to step back and enjoy their retirement. And most of the time, it’s “You gotta leave the game before the game leaves you.” Fans certainly appreciated Lee Corso a lot more after watching Evander Holyfield struggle through this broadcast. Whether it was an off day for Holyfield or just a mismatch for the panel, one thing’s for sure: Corso is still the beloved elder statesman compared to this chaotic, awkward display.
