Carson Beck enjoyed his best days at Georgia for 4 years, and he undoubtedly was phenomenal in all of them. Notching up 7,182 yards for an almost 75% pass completion rate in the 2023 season is just mind-blowing. Of course, there were some downgrades in his 2024 season when he only managed a 64.7% pass completion rate. But we know the type of player he is. However, what if someone tells you there’s a new QB in town that has the potential to dethrone Beck? Sounds a little extreme, right?
Carson Beck had transferred to Miami Hurricanes, which would be his last season in college football. The prospect was that he would be able to keep his top QB spot with a significant pay upgrade. Things were looking quite favorable for Beck until Miami signed Luke Nickel. A 4-star rated quarterback with abilities that may even give the top NFL QBs their run for money. Seems a little far-fetched? Well, hear this.
A recent video posted by On3 Recruits on YouTube termed him a generational prodigy. “Basically, when I was with the last game of his high school career, I basically saw perfection. I think he was 21 of 22 in the state championship game for like 430 plus yards and four touchdowns, and it’s a back-to-back state championship season, so what I saw in Luke Nickel was basically perfection”. The video featured a scout from On3’s recruitment team who had followed the player closely. He also said that the player had perfected himself a lot and would be key to Miami’s success in the future. But wait, there’s more.

— Luke Nickel (@LukeNickel5) August 11, 2023
Before Nickel committed to Miami back in August 2023, he was not judged to be so prolific by many other teams. And that, in the scout’s opinion, landed in favor of Nickel. “Before he committed to Miami, he tried to commit to another ACC school, who told him no, let’s wait, let’s work out in the summer. They’re probably kicking themselves right about what Luke has become because he wasn’t this kid two years ago, but he’s grown into that starting role.”
The main thing to be noted here, apart from his undervaluation by many teams, is that he is now fit for a starting role. That may, in some way, also affect Carson Beck’s chances in the team’s starting QB role. And before you ask the ‘how’ behind it. Let’s discuss it in detail.
Well, Carson Beck, as we all know, didn’t have the best of seasons in 2024 compared to his earlier seasons. Furthermore, it’s also a fact that he is NFL-eligible and would have been registered for the draft if he hadn’t signed for Miami. Add to that the fact that this will be his last year in college football. That adds another layer to the intrigue. So, Miami and Mario Cristobal would surely want to quickly transition Nickel for the starting role. But then the question comes: will he be able to step up to that role?
Nickel has a new partner in Miami to pair with.

Nickel is firstly a Milton High School graduate in Alpharetta, Georgia, which in itself is renowned for producing top talents. Furthermore, his performance in Milton’s 56-42 win over Fairburn Hughes in the Georgia State championship was a treat to watch. Where he single-handedly dominated the whole game. In the last year alone, he threw 3,748 yards at a 66.1% completion rate. Add to that he is currently the No. 20 QB in the 2025 class by 247. You have got yourself a recipe for guaranteed success and glory. And one of Miami’s recent prospects on the radar of Mario Cristobal would definitely help him in that.

Vodney Cleveland, a 4-star rated DL (2026 class) on On3, has been on Cristobal’s radar for some time now. He is a player who, at 6 feet and 2 and a half inches tall with a 305 lbs weight, is just a built tank on defense. The only problem in that story was that he was committed to Alabama. But then, as fortune would have it, he recommitted in December. He has been visited by several major colleges. But maybe the recent visit of Miami D-line Coach Jason Taylor to meet him in person would seal the deal. Who knows? But one thing is clear: with both Vodney and Nickel in the team, Miami would have all the ingredients for tasting glory.
