The story of Xavier Lucas seemed to have reached its conclusion after the NCAA intervention in the matter. However, as it goes with everything involving some drama, there is always potential for more drama, and that’s exactly what we have.
Let’s give you a short recap. Lucas joined Wisconsin Badgers in 2024 and played 11 times in the regular season. With 18 tackles and 1 sack as a cornerback, Lucas looked towards greener pastures after the official transfer portal window opened last month. It all started when Xavier wanted to leave the program. This was mainly due to his father’s serious illness becoming life-threatening. He did request to withdraw from the program but the Badgers refused on his demand. They wanted the two-year revenue-sharing agreement between the parties to continue and saw it as a breach of contract. What did Lucas do?
Well, even before he could get the transfer sorted, he registered at the University of Miami, giving clearing indications that he intends to join Mario Cristobal’s crew. Now comes the bombshell. The Badgers have accused Miami of interfering with their committed player.

The college, in its statement, said, “We have credible information indicating impermissible contact between Xavier and University of Miami football program personnel prior to Xavier’s request to enter the transfer portal. Direct interference with another institution’s committed player and contractual interests is prohibited by NCAA tampering rules and the law”.
Furthermore, they also said that they had substantial evidence of tampering by Miami and its personnel. However, it is not clear whether Head Coach Mario Cristobal is involved or not. The standoff has become a bone of contention between the Badgers and Xavier Lucas, with Lucas hiring a lawyer to wade through the situation. The university threatened not to budge on account of being undermined. But this is not it. There’s a lot more to the story. As the devil lies in the details so let’s explore its wicked side.
It’s an MOU conditioned on approval of the House settlement (which has yet to receive final approval) and Xavier attending classes no later than Spring 2025 (he unenrolled from the Institution). Furthermore, he sought to enter his name into the Transfer Portal, but the… https://t.co/XwIxNYF0wX

However, Lucas’ side of the story is a lot different. He alleges that the coaching staff denied his request to enter the transfer portal, and he posted this on his X account on December 27th. He said, “I still intend to transfer, but at the moment Wisconsin is refusing to release me into the transfer portal, I’ve met all NCAA requirements of the transfer portal process. I’ve yet to be put into the transfer portal by Wisconsin, which is impeding my ability to speak with schools“. Thus, only after his request was denied did he take the initiative to start discussions with the Miami Hurricanes. But why did the situation even come to this and what’s next for Lucas?
What’s next for Xavier Lucas and Wisconsin
The Big Ten conference actively supports the Badgers, as widely reported. Furthermore, they also do not want this situation to become a precedent for other athletes in the future, which could mean huge losses for the conference members. The Big Ten has also released a statement supporting the Badgers, which said, “As student-athletes become active participants in revenue sharing, it is critical that agreed obligations be respected honored, and enforced“. So, where are we heading in the controversy?

All ingredients together point out that the matter will not cool down any soon. Furthermore, NIL deals are also at stake for Xavier Lucas. With Wisconsin threatening legal recourse, it seems like a landmark legal precedent is set to unfold in the coming weeks.
