The race is on in the NFL draft to land a QB who can be the game-changer in the long term for the franchises. But what happens when there is a scarcity of staff in the department? What can teams do to wade through it? Sure, Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, and the likes of Jalen Milroe offer some promise in that department. But is it the best QB batch over the years?
Many would argue it is not. Cam Ward is someone who is highly touted to make the No. 1 draft pick. He is making inroads into the NFL analysts’ minds by conducting interviews, posting things on social media, and even saying some things that may rub the wrong way on many people. Recently, he said a similar thing that has riled up a former NFL legend. And, it’s looking quite ugly, here’s why.
Cam Ward had recently given a statement to the Associated Press regarding his future in the NFL. And it was quite blunt and full of self-confidence. “If you don’t draft me, that’s your fault. You’ve got to remember you’re the same team that’s got to play me for the rest of my career, and I’ll remember that”. Surely, this statement looks filled with confidence and self-belief. But, the question is, does he even have enough talent to make such statements?

Former Patriots and Carolina Panthers legend Cam Newton was asked the same thing if he did the right thing by uttering the statement. “At this time yes, next year nobody will give a f—. Yeah, there’s only one person who made a statement like that and it cashed in i.e. Peyton Manning told the Indianapolis Colts if you don’t draft me it’ll be over for you straight up“. Well, who could now even remotely argue with Peyton Manning’s statement, considering he is one the greatest of all time? However, Cam Newton didn’t stop there. He further added:
“But not everybody (merits the statement), it’s been other players that said that too. Josh Rosen said that too and look at how his career ended up. I do like what he said yes, but that’s just advertising bait for teams to draft him in the grand scheme of things. Dawg all that cool but when you get in that locker room ain’t nobody going to damn if you was the damn first pick or the 11th pick or the 33rd pick or the 111th pick M—— can you play?“. Well, we all know how Josh Rosen’s statement turned out to be as he didn’t even last 2 years as starting QB in the NFL. So, is it right for Cam Ward to make this kind of statement?

Does Cam Ward deserve the hype he is getting?
Well, yes and no, but mainly no. Undoubtedly, he is one of the best QBs around in the draft and will surely see a top 5 pick. But, still, there were some issues in his game as recent as his last season that may not entirely paint a rosy picture. For example, in last season only, we saw him constantly drifting into the pocket towards one side of the field. This enabled opposing defenders to pressure him easily and also disabled him from easily finding open receivers. Apart from that, he has another problem.
That is his calm and relaxed nature when he is in the pocket. Of course, this can be a very good thing at various times. But we still saw him sometimes losing that sense of urgency and holding the ball too long. This also affects his passing accuracy and timing but also provides defense enough room to tightly mark the receivers. The verdict?

Well, Cam Ward is still a superb QB who possesses exceptional arm talent, anticipation, and a natural playmaking prowess. That certainly makes a case for him to deserve the No. 1 spot in the draft. However, his statements will be detrimental to his cause or will paint him in bad light. Only time will tell.
